Anyway back to the topic. I've said this in a previous thread but it
bears mentioning again. What is the US gonna do, once a new "democracy"
is set up in Iraq, if a short time down the road the ppl freely elect a
gov't that is unfriendly toward the US? They are going to have to
maintain a military force in Iraq forever, to keep its puppet regime
propped up.

The ones most affected by war are the troops doing the fighting and
their families. The best thing civilian population can do is support
their troops. When civilians stop supporting their troops morale drops
and leads to more casualties.

your quite right karma, but here's the conundrum. In order to support
the troops, SOME ppl think you have to support the war as well. Or else
keep our freedom of speech to ourselves.

The problem is that as with Vietnam the media reports the worst. This
brings the civilian population to turn a blind eye to whatever good
happens. People then cease to support troops leading,as mentioned, to
casualties. Vietnam was lost by politicians and media not by the troops.

Quite right. The US NEVER lost a large unit battle in 'Nam. Every
battalion sized battle or bigger, the US kicked ass and kicked it hard.
Prime example of how one can win all the major battles and still lose
the war. Then again, it IS hard to win when major tactical decisions
have to come from half a world away from somebody who hasn't got clue
what the situation looks like. War has become very fluid, with
situations changing by the minute in combat. You NEED to have the
commanders in the field(preferably the ones on the front line) making
tactical decisions on the spot, no matter how big or small.

The media too is to blame. They have spent far too long earning their
living showing bad news. Sensationalism garners more viewers than
showing troops giving food to the children or helping a civilian re-open
a damaged well or whatever.

.... doesent matter now why we are there anyway. What matters now is
that we are there. playing the blame game now is counterproductive.
What is the right course of action now? If we pull out now, we loose.
That is the Sad truth. We are there for the duration now.

True words indeed Rambill. Now as back then remains the question of long
before the media rips the guts from the morale of the troops.

I think the troops are fine, its us back home getting the mind
twist. There are a lot of good things happening over there, yet we never
hear any of it. I listen to the BBC on shortwave and I think there is a
more balanced view going on there.
With our liberal media, Bush could shit Gold nuggets and they would
find something wrong with it. I like Bush, Though I would never have
started this war. Irrevalent now, though.

This war is an Urban War not like Vietnam which was both an urban and
Jungle war. Politicians saying what to do and not letting the Military
do their job. Business as usual of course. Not much difference of
course.

i completely agree with you rambill. it's a lose situation whether we
stay or go though. you cannot force a free government on people if they
don't want it and the american soldiers were placed right in the middle
of an unwinnable situation. not from a military stand point but from a
political stand point and that is why i did not vote to reelect bush. it
wasn't hard to see what the general outcome was going to be by going
into iraq and i think we should have kept the troops in afghanistan. i'm
to a point where i think we need to bring them home and let them get
back to a little normalcy in there lives and let iraq battle for it's
own independence the way everyone else got it. the next freely elected
government in iraq will not support america either way and i don't want
any more of our citizens to die for it.
