Topic: Create the laws of a wiccan/pagan Government | |
---|---|
As a wiccan/pagan what would an etire country be like if all its laws were created and bound by such a belief system?
What would consist of crime and what would be the punishment? What would the law 'require' of it's citizens. "Political structure" - who would rule and how would they assume their possition? |

could you tell me what your beliefs are as a Wiccan

sorry alexiscap, I hold no religious beliefs. The point of these "government" threads was so that we could imagine what a govenrnment might be like from the perspective of one single belief system.
THE GOAL would be to learn and see what values a 'free' society governed without any religious beliefs might incorporate. |

Look back at early Rome. not neccesarily Rome itself, but the lands around it. They were all pagaen (pre-non-christian so to speak). there is a good series of books I thnk by robert hawthorne ( I could have the wrong author, will look it up). It is based on merlin and arthr, butit is set up in the early rome days, and thus you get a good look at the political structure, etc. One book is actually called merlin another is pendragon there are four books to the series, it starts with the idea that merlins mother wa a survivor of atlantis. Real good series as well, lol. |

forgive me the author is stephen lawhead and the series is called "the pendragon cycle" with book four being pendragon.

i dont think a wiccans would really form a government, notice most civilizations are created by more aggressive religions (ie christianity) Not true. Although smaller in size (mainly due to the era when it was more popular and accepted), the wiccan and or pagaen belief structures DID have government style control. They did not usually get much more than the size of what would be a small town now, but they did have a ruling council and whatnot. |

a few millenium ago it would have been easier but again those people probably practiced a far less "refined" form of wicca, the phrase wicca is fairly new (gerald gardner i think coined it) the old religions which helped create wicca were much less oriented towards peace and love and the like, the greeks sacrificed animals regularly, something modern practioners of the craft would never think of doing and the romans well they had stuff like the gladitorial games
so perhaps the old world pagan religions were aggressive religions |

i think you're confusing culture with religion

The Druidic culture had living sacrifices yes. HOWEVER, Wicca has ALWAYS been a peaceful religion or belief structure. It is common myth that wicca (or witches) worshipped the devil in some way, or were at least affiliated with such. But the truth of the matter is, they have always promoted peace and the working together of two people (not literally two), hence their one law: "Do what ever it is that pleases you, AS LONG AS IT DOES NO HARM EVEN UNTO YOURSELF. paraphrased yes, but you get the basic belief behind it. |

and yes, some of the pagaen religions can/could be pretty bloody and sacraficial, but not all of them.

Both monotheistic cultures and polytheistic cultures have historically produced similiar governments.

lizard - so what you're saying is that there is really NOTHING coherant or chesive about any belief system, pertaining to Wiccan or Pagan or any beliefs laying claim to these titles in any way. Is that correct?
If such belief systems are capable of creating a society of similar belief patterns without ever encounter 'aggression', or the need for laws or governing bodies is it simply because no one cares what you believe or how you practice it? And what if one believer if found to be practicing some form of magic considered to be harmful? What action might be taken, who would take it? Or would it simply be a world of wizards and incantations - one's words and gods pitted against anothers? You see what I'm getting at here? If the purpose of the belief is personal, than what is there to 'teach' about it? What good does it bring to society? |
