Beauty is determined by genes and compatibility. State of health is largely unrelated. Excess weight is a type of injury. There are women who will preferentially show affection to guys who are behind in life and do not have a good job. Maybe it is not romance at all, but a human nature to help other people out and guide them to find better-virtued lifestyle. It seems to happen more in places where there is no socially strong central community, but more a fiefdom of couples. This is all anecdotal observation and I have not studied it.
