Case: This August, former Finance Minister of India, P Chidambaram was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and charge sheeted for receiving a bribe of $20,000 from a media company in 2007 for approving illegal investment from overseas to the tune of $500 million. Twitter responses to this news: Former diplomat K C Singh tweeted: “that’s less than what a revenue official charges in Punjab to get property registered. Another response to Chidambaram: “you r bhai so innocent”. The going rate being at least one per cent. A retired secretary of Government of India said that in terms of ease of doing business, $20,000 for FDI (foreign direct investment) of $500 million calls for a reward, not punishment. The case is now before India’s Supreme Court. |

While corruption in any Government or powerful institution is inevitable it must also be kept to a minimum by harsh punishments. A policeman who takes a bribe is bad, a politician who takes a bribe is worse but worst of all is the one who enters politics only for the bribes.

What makes this case different in here is that Chiddu is from a wealthy family. An idealist and left sympathizer. He didn't need the 'change' People get into politics as two bit lawyers who can't get clients, and leave as multi millionaires. None of them "need" the change. |
