The country on the radio is by far the most offensive radio music imaginable. As for the old stuff, I guess Townes Van Zandt or John Prine. Some newer alt-country that's great is the newest Purple Mountains album; older than that but still new - Magnolia Electric Co., Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch

I started playing guitar in a band during the late sixties, old rock N roll and chart stuff of the time,I thought country music old fashioned ,I went on to play keyboards/synths in various bands then solo playing a vast array of music ,I did that for 40 years, When I stopped playing live I sold all the electronic gear and got an acoustic guitar and a uke, this has become a few guitars and ukes, I re learned the guitar and became interested in picking, now I play for pleasure and friends a mixture of country and folk, what I had missed over all those years !!!!!
