Get away from politics as much as you can!

Why? Because something about politics is toxic to the Human psyche.

The toxicity has had a detrimental effect on civility.

Julia Manchester of The Hill reports the following:

Republican pollster Ed Goeas said in an interview that aired Thursday [13 Dec 2018] on What America's Thinking that the U.S. is in a "death spiral" when it comes to civility in politics.

"I do think that we are very definitely in a death spiral in terms of civility in this country, how we treat each other, how we talk about each other," Goeas, the president and CEO of the Tarrance Group, told Hill.TV's Jamal Simmons on Wednesday.

"The term that surfaced in this last election was tribalism, and it does have a little bit of the component to it, and again, it's all be aggravated by the selective watching of cable news and the use of social media," he continued.

Last month's midterm election results demonstrated a deeply partisan electorate in the U.S. amid heated political rhetoric coming from both sides of the aisle.

Polling shows that civility in politics is a point of major concern for Americans.

A PBS News Hour/NPR/Marist poll released last month found that 79 percent of Americans said they were concerned about the negative tone in U.S. politics and think it could lead to violence.

Much political friction comes from people fighting to maintain personal comfort.

Well, the government's job isn't to provide all of the comfort that an individual desires. Instead, the government's job is to protect the well being of our entire society while protecting individual rights.

The toxicity of politics is especially bad when there is no difference between one's politics and one's de facto religion. Instead of embracing the official U.S. motto "In God We Trust", some Americans embrace "In Government We Trust".

Adding to the toxicity of politics is the ongoing effort by some people to turn the USA into a theocracy of their liking. These people are quick to rant if their particular religious beliefs aren't civil law.

At the opposite extreme, some politicians try to punish people for practicing faith that the politicians disagree with. For example, read "Anti-Catholic Senators" by Steve Cortes.

Some religion-driven friction is caused by people trying to embrace two conflicting religions simultaneously (Example: Christianity and culture religion).

Sometimes I think that the government would be better off if it were in the hands of agnostics and atheists who respect the First Amendment, but I digress.

So, is there any way to get away from political toxicity?

Sure there is.

Answer: Stop acting as if the world owes you something, and stop acting a if the government should cater to your every desire. If you choose to be involved with politics, then don't let politics be the center of your life.

Granted, some people don't want to get away from political toxicity.

Keep in mind that the word toxic is the root of the word intoxication, and plenty of people enjoy being intoxicated.

America is full of people who are drunk on politics.

As Dean Wormer says in the movie Animal House, "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life."

Apparently, Dean Wormer wasn't into politics.

GREAT IDEA - I am sick of the political hacks saying one thing after the other without any REAL back-up. I think we need to keep up on some of our STATE affairs, who needs help, what needs to be done, etc. and solve some state problems. oh wait ! i guess that's political too........ but this is a great idea dodo

I think I relate. I think its more like a light shone on what was already there though, whatever the topic so long as it involves any kind of call on 'values', instead of just tastes.

Its like turning a light on and seeing the roaches scatter, when you didnt notice them at all with the lights off. That division is nothing new or caused by or exclusive to politics. We just, I believe, are OVERIMMERSED in what is out there due to internet. If you were to look it up, in just the past decade, we have seen an increase of 10 percent more of the US population coming online to a largely unregulated medium where people from all backgrounds can almost anonymously and without consequence make any claims and share any opinions floating in their heads. Its the removal of stigma, that shines a light on just how 'bad' people can get. In the age of anything goes and cruelty in the name of being 'honest' is more the norm, its not just politics that will see more and more incivility and indecency in conversation with so called 'adults'.

Just my two cents

I read somewhere that someone once said something like, politics is like sausage-making, you don't really want to see how it's done.

I have changed my post. Now, it has a new title and a reference to the American movie Animal House.

"Can't Democrats and Republicans just get along?"

I can't disagree with you more.

What I see you saying here, is basically "too many people are doing this (politics in this case) wrong, so therefore we should all stop doing it altogether."

That's a very illogical and destructive principle to put forward.

Instead, I suggest a more positive alternative. Since so many people ARE making a mess of politics (on purpose, mostly), and since politics is how we collectively go about guiding our nation and our people and our future, we should all instead, dedicate ourselves to HONORABLE BEHAVIOR.

The reason why politics is so toxic, is because lots of political LEADERS, decided that they could more easily gain power, if they behaved badly. As long as people continue to reward such bad behavior, it will continue.

When honorable and thinking people opt to GET OUT of political discourse, it causes a relative INCREASE in the ability of those without honor, to control the debate.

Please STAY involved with politics.

Just do it RIGHT, and oppose those who do it WRONG.

My first post in this topic is the rough draft, not the final version.

In the final version, I make no effort to give solutions.

Politics remind me of that game we played as kids, where a statement was given to the first one in line, and it went down about 20 kids. The last in line was told something entirely different, because the original statement got changed 19 times.

I think, in the dems case, they embellish the story to make it sound worse. Then, twenty news sources try to make it sound even more worse, in an effort to top one another.

Add onto it all, is dems that refuse to even listen to Trump talk.

I freely admit it, I couldn't stand to listen to obama clear his throat before speaking. If I got past that, then I was just cussing him out, calling him everything in the book as he talked. The mute button was just too easy to use.

I fully expect dyed in the wool dems to do the same as I did.

But I do suspect one difference. I don't think Trump's positive comments aren't going through as many hands in conservative news sources. And, he's going past all, by taking his comments directly to the public.

You may hate his tweets. They are coming directly from the source. They aren't coming from some doofus news commentator, be it MSM, or Fox news.

I don't bother to read the long posts. insignificant to me. I am watching our president speak tonight. He acknowledged the Congress, Vice President Pence and the First Lady. he did NOT recognize Nancy Pelosi. Good for him. Made a fool of her in front of the entire country. You should have seen the expression on her face. She just keeps fiddling with papers as he speaks. She just continues on sucking her lips and shifting papers. I think its going to feel like a long night to Ms. Pelosi.

Why now? Why is now the right time and the only possible right time? when crossings and illegals numbers have ALREADY been on the decline for decades? How did this man get so many people to believe in some urgent need for a wall to where they almost literally can think of or explain or defend or discuss ANYTHING else?

Its like Jonesville in America lately.
