Here's a strategy that might seem strange but has worked for me in the past...

Read their profile and start the conversation based on the information they have given you in their profile.

Personally, I look for things we might have in common.
I pay attention to what they are wearing and other items in the photos.

I remember having a discussion with a woman on 'date hookup' that told me she will have absolutely nothing to do with people who smoke pot and in one of her profile photos there was a bong sitting on the table behind her.

You get people like this because they pretend to be what you want.
When messaging someone, try to at least be consistent with what you wrote or post in your profile. Be consistent in your messages and responses.
Don't say one thing when first contacting them and in subsequent messages tell them something that makes you a liar.
