The word "Bible" refers to the canonical collections of sacred writings of Judaism and Christianity.
It's an ancient collection of writings, comprised of 66 separate books, written over approximately 1,600 years, by at least 40 distinct authors. The Old Testament contains 39 books written from approximately 1500 to 400 BC, and the New Testament contains 27 books written from approximately 40 to 90 AD. The Jewish Bible (Tanakh) is the same as the Christian Old Testament, except for its book arrangement. The original Old Testament was written mainly in Hebrew, with some Aramaic, while the original New Testament was written in common Greek. |

I think the question was how do YOU define it....not miriam webster |

I don't.
It's a collection of fairy tales, as stated above. |

I believe it is man's interpretation of history. I think man attempted to decipher God's (unspoken) word to the best of his ability and since Man is NOT perfect then thats makes the bible flawed. I don't think it is a "Fairy Tale" but man's (flawed) attempt to pass on the intent and messages from our maker.

a book edited by King James to keep his people in check I think I'll go with this one. Also like Eros pointed out, it's a large collection of stories by various differnet "authors" over many hundreds or even thousands of years. And I put the word “authors” in quotes because even though many of the stories are attributed to a single author it’s hard to know whether they might have been created by several authors, and or edited grossly as they were verbally passed down through the ages. Printed words simply weren’t as common as they are today. I think some of the Bible is indeed fairytales. Or if one prefers, we can simply call them allegories, parables or myths that were made up to make a moral or ethical point. I certainly believe that stories like the Great Flood of Noah was a made up fairytale. Although it may have been sparked by a real flood that wiped out a large civilization, and then authors used this as a warning to others of the wrath of God. Most people back in those days attributed uncommon natural disasters to an act of God. The New Testament is a totally different fable. The Jews were in great oppression by the Roman at that time. Evidently there were many rabbis and preachers preaching the coming of a messiah. They believed that the messiah would actually free them from their oppression. At least one or more of these preaching men were crucified on a cross and made into a martyr. Evidently the Romans crucified a lot of rebellious people in those days. This was certainly not an uncommon practice in those days. Stories were written about these rabbis, and King James chose to stories about the one named Jesus to be the messiah. Instead of saving the Jews from the Romans it turns out that the messiah was supposedly savaging all men from evil. It obviously didn’t work as we have seen much oppression since that time. Desperate times give rise to desperate stories. One can only imagine what it would have been like to live under Roman oppression. King James was obviously the one who turned this all into a solidified religion. |

How do you define the Bible? Bible is a Latin word. The definition is "library" The connotation is that the Holy Bible is a book of many books. Abra, my gut hurts! STOP IT!!! |

As I have stated in previous posts...
Bible to me is the infallible, inspired, inherent Word of the Living God. I believe each and every word from Genesis to Revelation, cover to cover. It is the owners manual for human being-a must read. And one of my jobs as a Christian is to "Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks me a reason of the hope that is in us with meakness and fear." |

1823 quote by Thomas Jefferson: "The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus by the Supreme Being as his father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter."

Just proves that you don't have to know everything to be president! It'll be interesting to see how people define God, Jesus, and the Bible when they stand before Him on Judgement Day. |

I seriously doubt that the creator of this universe will turn out to be an arrogant egotistical pig. Those traits seem to fit men more than God. |

Well, if you really believe that then you know that Jesus often spoke using parables to make a point. If you believe that Jesus was God, then surely you know that God speaks in parables. So why take the Bible so literally when Jesus himself has shown that speaking in parables is his thing? |

I am absolutely certain that the God I know and love is not an arrogant, egotisitical pig. You are so right that your description fits mankind, not God. He is all loving and not willing that any should perish. They do so by their own choice. And yes, all DO have a choice. I believe every person on this Earth knows the reality of God in their heart, but many choose to be blind to the truth, because of the lifestyles they choose to live. |

I believe every person on this Earth knows the reality of God in their heart, but many choose to be blind to the truth, because of the lifestyles they choose to live. That’s precisely how I believe too. Lifestyle is what matters. Not which comic books a person chooses to believe in. |

Matthew 13:10- And the desciples came and said to Him (Jesus) "Why do you speak to them in parables?" And He answered and said to them. "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven but to them it has not been granted. "For" whoever has, to him shall more be given, and he shall have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. "Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. |
