Some words for the fallen :

They ask us why we do it,
Why we still parade,
Now we are getting older and just a little frayed,
It's not for the sake of glory or the medals on our chest,
It's simply that we were comrades who stood the final test,
on those fateful days, days we'll never forget,
Many laid down his life and paid the final debt,
So when you see a veteran give the man your hand,
For the medals on his chest were won in foreign lands,
And when god asks the question, who are you my man,
I will proudly answer, sir, I'm a veteran!

mikey as I have mentioned before,my Father was in the first world war, and I take your words for the fallen as they should be,

But the times our Mum used to say to him,put your Medals on and join the Remembrance Parades, He would just shake His head and say,I remember every day I live, How that War destroyed peoples lives.
Broken but still Proud.

You offen found this from that era.
Every day until the end of their lives was a remembrance day for them.
A guy called "harry patch "was one of the ones people will have heard of.
Thanks for your comments wellworn, and thanks for sharing your father's thoughts.

Nice poem.

Here is something I wrote that I used to post on my facebook page on Veteran's Day. It kinda fits...

You signed an official contract that pledged your life to our country. You left your home and changed your life. You were/are prepared to do battle in the name of freedom. Following orders to the brink of death. You watched friends grow as you became stronger, resourceful and wiser. Sadly, some of us watched our friends die. You did your duty for your country and we appreciate your dedication. You are entitled to the benefits and reverence this nation owes you.
Happy Veterans Day to all my fellow warriors.
Remember the Fallen!

Same with my grandfather. He was in WW1 and WW2. He never talked about it. We don't have a word like veteran, because it was not his choice. He was a believer of God, so I would name him an Overcomer.

Thanks for your open words.
