Human Beings are strange critters. We cause the problems we complain about.

Secrecy is established because the general public can't keep their mouths shut.
"I'm sure the US founding members had many secrets when they wrote they Free Speech rights".
Bill of Rights of the United States of America (1791)
http://www.billofrightsinstitute.org/founding-documents/bill-of-rights/

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Certain Supreme Court Cases have influence over the laws pertaining to Free Speech.

Schenck v. United States (1919)

Freedom of speech can be limited during wartime. The government can restrict expressions that “would create a clear and present danger that they will bring about the substantive evils that Congress has a right to prevent.”

Abrams v. United States (1919)

The First Amendment did not protect printing leaflets urging to resist the war effort, calling for a general strike, and advocating violent revolution.

Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire (1942)

The First Amendment did not protect “fighting words” which, by being said, cause injury or cause an immediate breach of the peace.

Cohen v. California (1971)

A California statute prohibiting the display of offensive messages violated freedom of expression.

R.A.V. v. St. Paul (1992)

A criminal ordinance prohibiting the display of symbols that “arouse anger, alarm or resentment in others on the basis of race, color, creed, religion or gender” was unconstitutional. The law violated the First Amendment because it punished speech based on the ideas expressed.

One of the things that really gets me is that people tend to think that just because they have certain rights in their home country, those rights are mandated when they are in other countries.

In some countries your Freedom of Speech will get you killed whether you are a resident or not. NEWS speech isn't free in countries like North Korea and China.
Even in Free nations some respect to integrity is expected. Its like going into your neighbors home and blasting their marital problems on a loudspeaker. You could do it but you shouldn't.

Ever notice how the press will report all about the 2nd amendment but never reports on the first amendment unless it it violated?
Its because people are full of shidt.
Most NEWS is opinion and slanted towards an agenda.
NEWS (North East West South) tells you what they want you to know.
They determine your "Right Way to Think" and "What You Should be Concerned About".
Along with advertising, they are turning people into sheep.
The more heed you give, the more controlled you are.
Then you sit at home or at work and wonder why you are so damn stressed out.

By the way, isn't the real problem here, that someone in the Government LEAKED the information to the press? There's nothing in the story I've seen, claiming that the people who published the information, broke into a data base or an office somewhere and stole it.

ABSOLUTELY! it was the government / secret service of the US who leaked it to the new York times! !!
It put the fact that we share sensitive information in jeopardy all because some rag tag news paper wants to make a few bucks! !
