i am disheartened to find this out......wish there was something i could do.....times like this is when it is rough to be away from home......this was a friend of mine and i will be praying for his family......r.i.p. sam...you will not be forgotten and sadly missed......i wish i was home......sam helped me alot when barry died and was there for me when most weren't.........he always knew the right words to say to comfort me when times were rough......he helped me through many difficult times and when he needed help it was me he called......forever in my heart you'll remain sam.........

County man found shot to death in home

Acquaintance charged with first-degree murder

A parent's worst fear came true Saturday when a father checking on his son whom he could not contact found the man on a sofa in the victim's living room, dead from a shotgun blast to the head. Another Cumberland County man has been charged with the slaying, according to officials and an arrest warrant.

Family members discovered the body of Samuel Pugh Jr., 37, at his 5957 Lantana Rd. home about mid-day Saturday. Investigators believe he was shot while he slept on a sofa during the dark hours of Saturday morning. Manner of death has been ruled a homicide and cause of death the gunshot wound to the head.

Arrested a few hours later was Stephen Michael Yerian, 30, 466 Midway Rd., on a warrant charging first-degree murder and signed by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Tommy Callahan. Bond was set at $500,000 and he is to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court for a bond hearing and for the purpose of determining whether Yerian has an attorney on Nov. 26.

According to the affidavit on the murder warrant, Callahan wrote that police responded to the 911 call at the Pugh residence and found the victim "lying on his couch. Pugh was covered in a blanket on the couch with his shoes off. Pugh had a gunshot wound to the face and the gunshot blast had penetrated the blanket covering him and then into his jaw."

The warrant goes on to state that Yerian told at least one person that he had shot Pugh. When picked up by investigators with the sheriff's department and TBI, Pugh reportedly provided police with a written statement, saying a single-shot shotgun was used in the shooting. A similar weapon has been recovered that is believed to be the murder weapon, according to the warrant.

Investigators have declined to release much information about the case or a motive.

Sheriff Butch Burgess said the probe was ongoing, but no one is stating publicly what a motive for the killing may have been.
