My 9 year old daughter has struggled for a long time with some emotional/anger issues. Last year, against my better judgment and at the advice of a psychiatrist,we put her on the Daytrana patch. It is a form of ritalin that adheres to the skin and releases meds throughout the day. Well, 2 weeks ago,she came down with what I thought was a bladder infection. We went to the doctor-no infection. They ordered an ultrasound and other tests. Her right kidney has lost all function and is filling up with blood. Noone seems to have an explanation and in the meantime, she is suffering. I guess I just want to know if anyone knows of a correlation between Daytrana and kidney problems. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Also we could use some prayers. Thanks!

She's been off the meds for about 5 months now. We,too, got nowhere with the exception of her being a zombie.

Look the medicine up on goggle or anywhere on the net to see
what it says about side effects and health hazards...
Some of these medicines have bad adverse effects.
Doctors don't allways tell us these things.

Tell your doctor about any heart conditions, including structural abnormalities, your child or a family member may have. Inform your doctor immediately if the child develops symptoms that suggest heart problems, such as chest pain or fainting.

Daytrana should not be used if the child has: significant anxiety, tension, or agitation; allergies to methylphenidate or other ingredients of Daytrana; glaucoma; discontinued in the last 14 days or is taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI); tics, or family history or diagnosis of Tourette's syndrome.

Tell your doctor before using Daytrana if the child: is being treated for or has symptoms of depression (e.g. sadness, worthlessness, or hopelessness) or bipolar disorder; has family history of tics; has abnormal thoughts or visions, hears abnormal sounds, or has been diagnosed with psychosis; has had seizures or abnormal EEGs; has or has had high blood pressure; exhibits aggressive behavior or hostility. Tell your doctor immediately if the child develops any of these conditions/symptoms while using Daytrana.

In clinical studies side effects were generally mild to moderate. The most common side effects reported with Daytrana were decreased appetite, sleeplessness, sadness/crying, twitching, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, tics, and affect lability (mood swings). Aggression, new abnormal thoughts/behaviors, mania, and growth suppression have been associated with use of drugs of this type. Tell your doctor if the child has blurred vision while using Daytrana.

Abuse of Daytrana can lead to dependence.

Daytrana should be applied daily to clean, dry skin, which is free of any cuts or irritation. Skin irritation or allergic skin rash may occur.

dhutch, I'm having a hard time labeling this thing to try and research for ya. Is this considered kidney failure or kidney dysfunction. So far I'm not finding any side effect of the Daytrana to be kidney related. Any medical phrases they threw at you would be helpful. ADD and ADHD are rough to deal with mainly because what works with who varies so radically and they still don't know long term effects on kids, which is why a lot of medical doctors don't even want to attempt to treat this any more, but pass it off to psyche. Lookin up more stuff because I don't want to tell you anything I'm not sure of. Did the word aneurysm come up at all? No, not brain. They can occur in other arteries too.

No aneurysm. The 2 specialists we have seen are stumped. They said they see this a lot in kids who have had trauma to the back (she's not had any). I was just wondering about the Daytrana because everything else seems to be a dead end. We have a couple more appt. over the next week. I'm trying to get a referral from the insurance co. to go to St. Louis-more technology, hopefully a doctor with an answer.

My prayers also. Question? Did she ever have any higher than normal doses of ibuprofen while on her patch? Other drug interactions?

My prayers are with you and your daughter.

If you want the name of a great doctor I know one. He's in Charlottesville Virginia, at UVA. Top 100 hospitals in the US.

Thanks Hawaii. As far as the ibuprofen-I do give it for fevers, headaches occassionally. But not more than needed. Is there something to that? LLHS-absolutely! That would be great. Thanks guys.
