If you haven't researched the hippie philosophy about free love, they believed marriage was another unnecessary institution created by the Man. They believed the concept of a loving and personal relationship shouldn't be regulated or interfered by the church or state, as well as being an institution that creates emotional possessiveness and psychological enslavement. This explains why married couples have to get a marriage license from the state, why weddings are often officiated by the two family's religious institutions, why some spouses are abusive and controlling, and why you have to go through the state to separate yourself from another person when you no longer love them. Weddings and domestic partnership ceremonies are just big businesses, because it involves spending hundreds of thousands of dollars just to tell a person you love them. The best solution to all of this is to stay boyfriend/girlfriend with someone. The only thing you would really get out of a marriage or a domestic partnership is benefits from the other person.
