Judge Asks ‘Is This For Real?’
July 31, 2016, by Tribune Media Wire

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A judge in Kentucky was furious when the local jail sent a female inmate to court without her pants and was refused “any kind of hygiene products” during her three-day stay in jail.

The woman, who was not identified, was brought into Jefferson District Court on Friday. When Judge Amber Wolf saw what she was wearing, she can be heard asking, “Is this for real?”

“No pants? What?” Wolf can be heard asking when the woman’s attorney mentioned the issue.

The woman’s attorney told the judge her client requested a jail jumpsuit. She also said jail officials “refused to give her pants and any kind of hygiene products that she needed.”

“What the hell is going on?” Wolf can be heard saying to someone on the phone. “I am holding her here until she is dressed appropriately to go back to jail. This is outrageous.”

Later in the video, Wolf asks: “Am I in the twilight zone? What is happening?”

Jail officials told WDRB the woman was wearing short athletic shorts that were completely covered by her long shirt. Steve Durham, a spokesman for the jail, said the woman had not been in custody long enough to receive a jumpsuit.

“This is pretty standard that when individuals are arrested, they remain in the clothing that they’ve been arrested in,” Durham told WDRB. “Especially for the first 72 hours."

However, in the video, Metro Corrections Deputy Director Dwayne Clark can be seen bringing clothing to the woman and told Wolf she should have been given a jumpsuit.
“Dressed like she was, she should have been changed into a jumpsuit,” Clark said.

“I just want to tell you how incredibly sorry I am that you’ve been treated this way,” Wolf told the woman after she was given clothes. “No one deserves this, but particularly in a situation like this where you failed to complete a diversion program… and didn’t even pick up new charges.”

The woman was being held for not completing a diversion program following a 2014 shoplifting charge. She was released from jail with time served and a $100 fine

“The fact you’re in custody is your fault ― you gotta come to court,” Wolf said. “The rest of this is completely inhumane and unacceptable, and I’m incredibly sorry you had to go through this.”<br>

The jail is currently investigating claims that the woman and other inmates were denied hygiene products

Agreed.

There is only ONE way for any society or organization to ensure that their rules and laws are respected, and that is if they firmly adhere to them THEMSELVES at all times.

That's just not true at all....

I'm pretty "pro law enforcement" but a blind eye can't be turned to needed jail reform....not prison....jail reform.
Conditions in many jails....which overwhelmingly hold those awaiting trail and who are innocent until proven guilty... border on the barbaric.

Well let's start by hiring enough people to see the job is done appropriately. Apparently, the jail get over run with people especially in the cities. With jobs being eradicated and people leaving not being replaced standards can only get worse.

I can only say it can be paid for and crime can drop making our officers safer and the jail population lower. It will also make the state wealthier. Unfortunately alot of states are not on board yet.

Btw it wasn't like she was naked. The woman had clothing maybe not court room appropriate but he'll. Its not like they took he clothes beat and took he to court. I bet if you look at this jail we will find it overpopulated and understaffed.

That's not the fault of someone expecting their guaranteed due process....
Anyone, and especially a woman, coming into our local jail wearing anything coming close to being remotely revealing is immediately covered up appropriately.....even if its just a paper suit.
That whole "72 hour" line by the jail official is complete bs.
And try showing up on your own to a court room wearing shorts.....here, you'll never make it through the door.

Not excusing the Jail staff, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who would rather wear their comfortable street clothes then the orange jump suit.

People should  be held responsible for not doing  their job.
Consequences  for our actions  & inactions.
Criminal  & city employees.

I don't see the point of hiring MORE women & paying them for a CITY job & benifits to look & see if other women are covered up & to pass put tampex.

This is intentional neglect & abuse.
The workers are not there to pass judgement via humiliation & degradtion.

Still doesn't address the real problems going on with overpopulation and understaffing. This is what should be investigated. The inability of the people able to obviously complete there job. Reaching for an excuse as was done. Did this person have the right to speak to the press at all. In this state we have people designates to speak to the press for a statement. The person giving the statement should have done more research before giving an implausible excuse. You maybe a cop, but I am a social worker. And even though she was t clothed appropriately for court she was clothed.

Evidently not appropriately enough for that judge....

something we can agree on

with the exception of them being naked in their home,, if they are comfortable enough wearing it out in public,, they should be comfortable wearing it to the court if they are caught

unless its more a matter of courtroom standards of dress, which a judge should be able to have a say in,,if the county can afford to abide and provide that standard clothing
