Actually, lots of the polite catch sayings really are "meant," just not literally.
My interest in such phrases, is historical, how they often began as genuine and specific wishes or admonitions, and evolved into idiomatic phrases later as society evolved. "God bless you" when a person sneezes, apparently began as a sincere and direct response, because it was thought that a person's heart stopped beating during a sneeze, and the then fairly religious society wanted to use an immediate prayer to carry the person over their momentary "death" and return to life. After it became such a general habitual thing to say that it lost its religious connotation, eventually even some atheists say it to each other. |
