okay, so i have this box of benadryl allergy capsules...and i'm sneezing all over the place. the pills are gel-caps, so as a vegetarian, i can't eat the casing.
feeling lazy, i decided to cut the pill open and just swallow the contents, rather than mix them with a drink and chug. anyhow, i poured the powder on my tongue and swallowed quickly. MISTAKE! my mouth and throat are completely numb...like i've swallowed novacaine or something, with a burn at the edges...my lips feel swollen...and it's almost impossible to swallow. yep, don't try this at home. i'm a dumbass. |

why did you buy capsules if you knew you couldn't take them
Just wondering!! |
yeah otc drugs suck
it's really unpleasant. i feel like i'm choking.
maybe you should try snorting it. yeah...that's the ticket. |
i didn't buy them, they were given to me.
what are the capsules made of that you can not have them. I guess I never thought about what they were.
hope your mouth gets better soon! |
they are made of gelatin, which is an animal product.
ten minutes later...and it's beginning to wear off. still numb, but i can tell it won't be much longer. reminder to self: mix with water and chug quickly. |
don't think snorting would be a good thing at this point...the you couldn't breathe along w/your other symptoms... all kidding aside maybe you need to go to the er or poison control...good luck

thanks!

snorting them yeah ,thanks for that idea to.
heh, that was extreme sarcasm...i wouldn't suggest snorting it.
not going to the ER, as it is getting better...and it's not like i over-dosed or anything. it's ONE benadryl pill. i swear, it felt like i had too many pecans or something. |

Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benedryl, has local anesthetic properties which probably explains what happened.
Try a tablet next time instead of a capsule. I don't know for sure if Benedryl makes tablets but Claritin (loratadine) does for sure. It's not the same drug, but works just as well. P.S.- Thumbs up on the vegetarianism and knowing capsules are made of gelatin. |

Some capsules are time released and can be dangerous to just swallow the contents I think Worth checking into anyway.....
Sad part....I never actually questioned what a gel cap was lol.
I used to take meds out of their pill casing cause I couldn't swallow pills for a long time...omg the taste was horrible! It makes nyquil taste like koolade! |
no, i checked, they aren't time-release. i regularly break them into my drink to quickly take...slightly faster than a pill, but only because you don't have to digest the capsule.
had it BEEN time-release, then yes...it would be a bad idea. it would also not be in a gel-capsule. claritin doesn't work QUITE as well for me...but it also doesn't make me sleepy, which benadryl does. of course, they were given to me by a well-meaning soul...so i had no hand in the purchasing. i walked several miles today, so i was being lazy in that i didn't feel like getting up for a drink. note to self: laziness is BAD, lori...BAD. |

licking pill powder=bad. |

If by 'idiot', you mean adventurous experimenter in the field of medications, then I agree whole-heartedly with the thread title.
