Fears grow for priest 'kidnapped by ISIS' who may be crucified on Good Friday

Ruth Halkon

Fears are growing for a priest believed to have been kidnapped by ISIS as sickening reports suggest he may be crucified on Good Friday.

Father Tom Uzhunnalil was seized when four armed militants stormed an old people's home in Aden in Yemen on March 4.

The gunmen killed 16 people, including four nuns, in the brutal attack.

No group has come forward to claim responsibility for the kidnap of the priest, who was a member of the Silesian order in Bangalore, India, but a survivor said ISIS was to blame.

Now reports shared on social media suggest the priest faces being brutally tortured this Friday as Christians mark the day Jesus died.

The Franciscan Sisters of Siessen, based in South Africa, posted on Facebook: "Was informed that the Salesian priest, Fr.Tom who was kidnapped by ISIS from the Missionaries of Charity Home in Yemen is being tortured and is going to be crucified on Good Friday.

"This calls for serious concerted prayers from all of us."

Fr Tom has been missing since March 4

Since the reports were posted, members of Fr Tom's order have stepped forward to deny them.

However they are unable to say where the priest may be held or whether he is alive or dead.

The sole survivor of the attacks apart from the priest said ISIS was to blame

Father Mathew Valarkot, spokesman for the Salesians’ Bangalore province to which the kidnapped priest belongs, said: “We have absolutely no information on Fr Tom.

"But even today we do not know who has taken him and what their motives are because no one has claimed responsibility."

Earlier this month, the sole survivor of the brutal attack, Sister Sally, described how the militants, who she said belonged to ISIS, killed everyone else.

Her account, reported in the Christian Post, described how she evaded death while the ISIS fighters searched for her by hiding behind a door.

It reads: "They were killed one by one. They tied them to trees, shot them in the head and smashed their heads."

"These ISIS men were everywhere, searching for her, as they knew there were five [nuns]

"At least three times they came into the refrigerator room. She did not hide, but remained standing behind the door — they never saw her. This is miraculous.

22 dead in Yemen triple suicide bombings claimed by IS
AFP 3 hours ago

Aden (AFP) - Three suicide bombings claimed by the Islamic State group on Friday struck checkpoints of Yemeni loyalist forces in Aden, killing 22 people, including 10 civilians, a security official said.

The bombings were followed by an attempt to attack a nearby large base of the Saudi-led Arab pro-government coalition which recently turned its guns on jihadists in southern Yemen.

The attacks came a year after the coalition launched on March 26, 2015 an air campaign against Shiite rebels in support of internationally backed President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.

The IS-affiliated Amaq news agency said in an online report that "IS fighters have launched three martyrdom operations and an attack on a base of the coalition in Aden".

Two bombs went off simultaneously at separate checkpoints in Shaab district, on Aden's western outskirts, before gunmen launched an attack on the nearby base of the military coalition, an official said.

Apache helicopters belonging to the coalition carried out strikes on positions of gunmen in the surrounding area as the assailants tried to advance toward the base.

A third explosive device planted in an ambulance was detonated at checkpoint near Mansura, in central Aden, the official said.

The Arab coalition waging the year-long bombing campaign against Shiite Huthi rebels only began targeting jihadists for the first time last week in Aden.

The Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda have exploited the chaos, widening their footholds in the south and carrying out deadly attacks, mostly against forces loyal to Hadi.

A US air strike Tuesday on an Al-Qaeda training camp in the southeastern province of Hadramawt killed more than 70 fighters in a major blow to the extremist group.

Al-Qaeda's branch in Yemen is considered by Washington to be the most dangerous affiliate of the international terror organisation.

The Arab coalition launched its air campaign against the Huthis in March last year as the Iran-backed rebels advanced on Hadi's refuge in Aden and forced him to flee to Riyadh.

Loyalists have since managed to drive the rebels out of Aden and four other southern provinces, thanks to the military support of the coalition.

But the coalition has failed to deal a decisive blow to the rebels and their allies, who continue to control large parts of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, which they seized in September 2014.

The United Nations says about 6,300 people have been killed since March last year, with civilians accounting for more than half.

New hopes for a breakthrough in the conflict surfaced on Wednesday when UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said warring parties had agreed on a ceasefire that would be observed before peace talks start on April 18.

Previous negotiations have failed and several ceasefires were never respected.

Seems his fate is uncertain atm...

"" According to the Times, Thomas Uzhunnali, a
56-year-old Indian Catholic Salesian priest,
was brutally murdered on the Christian holy
day that commemorates the crucifixion of
Jesus Christ at the hands of the Romans.

However, since the Times’ report, Catholic
News Service’s Rome bureau chief, Cindy
Wooden said in a tweet Monday that Bishop
Paul Hinder, head of the Catholic Church in
Yemen, had “strong indications” Uzhunnalil
was still alive.""

Agreed Reb. Good observation. I noted that too. AL jazeera would have definitely been all over that. Remember the middle eastern fighter pilot they burned in a cage?
My belief is that western media are the ones who are spreading this rumor to "stir the hate pot." Which seems to be working. ISIS wouldn't crucify any one. Especially not on a "crusader" holiday. Also if they did they would be replicating the status of the Romans. A crusader force. They will decapitate, burn or just kill someone. The fate of this priest is sealed. My condolences to this priest family.

...my apologies to the families that do and have suffered by these dark creatures that writhe on earth...I can't even imagine a day over there ...really my comment is covered in sarcasm...I was in a heated argument with friends and at one point I had to walk away...my friends were yelling some for some against the refugee families moving to my town...my experiences with the local people over the years have given me a very accurate view of what we may face ...we are a very diverse community...we are a splash of everything...and co exist beautifully...because my lack of understanding of their beliefs, and the media hype...I don't know how to feel...but the comment I made really was out of context...darn text never reads like I think it...ohwell ..but I am curious how approximately 25 young Muslim boys will blend with the rowdier boys here...who all pretty much own guns...I just don't know ...guess we will find out...have a great day drinker flowerforyou
