CARSON CITY, NV - Carson City is still coming to grips with the death of Deputy Carl Howell. Howell was a nine-year veteran of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office killed in the line of duty in August. Friday, November 13, 2015, Sheriff Furlong accepted condolences on behalf of Howell from two unexpected sources.
August 20 of this year, it seemed as if all of northern Nevada took time out to stop and pay respects to Deputy Carl Howell. The deputy was killed in the line of duty after trying to break up a domestic violence call in the Capital City. The highway between Carson City and Reno shut down, with people waving flags and signs to honor the fallen officer. The Sheriff says the town is still recovering from the incident--it had been 50 years since the last deputy was killed in the line of duty On the afternoon of November 13 at the sheriff’s office, two unexpected sympathy messages arrived from actors contacted by Carson City resident Don Alexander. Alexander, a fan of both Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, says the two are known for reaching out to community servants in law enforcement, firefighting and the military “To get an email saying you have a donation coming, was amazing. And to get an email saying here's a video. It was just outstanding,” says Alexander The check was officially presented to Sheriff Furlong in the lobby by the Gary Sinise Foundation for $2500. A DVD with a message from Joe Mantegna to Howell's family and the community was also presented. “I would just like to express my condolences to the family of Deputy Carl Howell. His wife Rachel, and to his children, Lanae, Jaden, Lillian and Analise,” says Mantegna in the recorded message. “These are people that we watch on our TVs every night. And they are heroes in our living rooms. And to see them turn around and recognize the losses that we have suffered, and wanting to be a part of our family is just so moving,” says Sheriff Furlong The sheriff says honoring Deputy Howell is far from over. In December a portion of I-580 which goes through Carson City will be named after the fallen deputy. http://www.kolotv.com/home/headlines/Continued-Condolences-For-Deputy-Howell-348084411.html I just had to post this because of the amazing gesture, and the fact I helped make this possible :) I arranged for the video tribute to be made and gave them the details of what happened, information about Deputy Howell and his family and I also reached out to Gary Sinise who was happy to help. You can see the video Joe Mantegna made on the link above as well as me being interviewed. |

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office received some support from Hollywood in honor of fallen Deputy Carl Howell.
Actors Gary Sinise, from Forrest Gump and CSI: NY, and Joe Mantegna, from Criminal Minds and The Godfather 3, reached out to the Sheriff’s Office to show their support for the department in the wake of Howell’s death. Howell was killed in the line of duty August 18 when he was shot responding to a domestic disturbance call. Carson City local Don Alexander presented Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong with a video message from Mantegna and a check for the Howell family from Sinise Friday afternoon at the Sheriff’s Office. Alexander reached out to both men after hearing about what happened to Howell to see if they could help, because both actors are large advocates for public service support. “I heard about what happened and I wanted to help,” Alexander said. “I contacted Gary Sinise through his foundation’s website and Joe through his personal website and he responded the next day. Gary responded two days after.” “It feels amazing (that they helped out),” Alexander said. “It’s the least I could do.” Sinise sent a check for $2,500 from himself and his wife Moira, and Mantegna recorded and sent a video message for the department and community. “I would just like to express my deepest condolences to the family of Deputy Carl Howell,” Mantegna said. “I have always said that it takes a special person to be in law enforcement, the fire department or the military, and Carl was in all three and that makes him Superman in my book. People like Carl are a rare breed and he will never be forgotten.” The video message from Mantegna was originally premiered at a fundraiser for Howell and his family at the 5 Clover Ranch in October. “We first saw this at the event at the Ranch in Douglas County and I was so taken aback, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house” said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. “You have people who are so recognizable as their roles as actors and the fact that they recognized not only Carl, but his family, each of his children individually, but to recognize the challenges that all officers face nationwide, we are just honored.” Furlong said the department feels so honored to be recognized by these nationally known men, and the support from them and the nation as a whole has been amazing. http://www.nevadaappeal.com/news/19049541-113/hollywood-stars-gary-sinise-and-joe-mantegna-honor |

I didn't know that Joe Mantegna was a supporter of LEOs/firefighters/military, but I knew that Gary Sinise has absolutely been a REAL 'class act'. Pretty awesome that they reached out like that.

I didn't know that Joe Mantegna was a supporter of LEOs/firefighters/military, but I knew that Gary Sinise has absolutely been a REAL 'class act'. Pretty awesome that they reached out like that. Joe s co-hosted with Gary the national Memorial Day Concert in Washington DC since 2005 and has made donations and appearances at numerous Military related charities and golf tournaments. |
