Is the Rocky Horror Picture Show a sort of Jesus allegory?

Dr. Frank N. Furter has followers, betrayers, he makes a man of his own,
in the end he's destroyed by one of his own... kinda similar to the
Jesus story, right? (Except with better music and platform heels....)

He brought wisdom, enlightenment and a sort of odd salvation...

I can't comment on the ananoly to Jesus Recon, but that's one of my
daughter's all time favorite movies. I had to get it for her on DVD. As
long as it's been around, I never seen it until she became so taken by
it. It's most definately a classic! They play it here at the theater
once a year too and people come from all over dressed in drag to watch
it. It certainly has staying power for sure!! LET'S DO THE TIME WARP
AGAIN!!

I dont think it had anything to do with religion honestly but it was a FUN movie. I saw it about 15 times as one of my old boyfriends just loved it. I even got my mom and dad to go one night when they were in their 40s (yes I was only in my 20s then).

I saw it once. about 1980 i believe. In Columbia Mo. The college students liked it so much they had a theater devoted to it 7 days a week for several years ( it's seems at least) sorry i did not care for it much but the girls loved it.. Blessings.. Miles

Rocky Horror a Jesus allegory??

I have never heard that one before- I have heard Frankenstein, vampires, cult, etc. but not a Christian interpretation- I would think if it is there it is mocking which would be too bad because I always thought the movie was just innocent fun/funny.

Wow, talk about a "time Warp". Can anyone think of another play or movie that has had such a long run AND still continues?

Well there ya go, another similarity. As the show has amassed millions of followers, who religiously trek to as many showings as they can. Dress up, sing the songs, do the heckling, and bring in new members all the time?

It hasn't gotten to the point of requiring a bible, it's still at the word of mouth stage, handed down in hyms !!!drinker drinker

Of course being a bit conservative, for my son's sake, I did have to explain that it wasn't a good idea to sing his favorite song around the other 1st graders. "I'm just a sweet tranvestite". That's when he took to singing "dam it Janet, I love you". laugh laugh

He's 23 now, still loves borrowing my movie.

Redy-

You're right!!! Watching/participatingin a showing of the movie has become a kind of religious experience. I wasn't thinking about how ritualistic the "followers" of this "cult classic" are while watching either- the umbrellas, the squirt guns, some phrases are spoken aloud by all in audience, others are only spoken by the on-screen charactors.

I first saw it in college- we had a retro outdoor film festival- Rocky Horror was by far the most fun one. I still don't think the movie itself is a Jesus allegory though...

Jesus Christ Superstar is a great play/movie obviously (and not covertly) based on Christianity, but Rocky Horror? It may have a "religious" following but the story itself- I think it's just another Frankenstein story.

Ghost-

Actually is this what made you think of that connection? Both Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar were produced by the same people:

According to Wikipedia (a good enough source for trivia):

The Rocky Horror Show is a long running stage musical (opening in London initially, on June 19, 1973) that inspired the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was written by Richard O'Brien, who returned to his native England after growing up in New Zealand. The musical was developed by O'Brien in collaboration with Australian theatre director Jim Sharman, who had already gained extensive experience directing rock musicals with the groundbreaking Australian productions of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. It came eighth in a BBC Radio 2 listener poll of the "Nation's Number One Essential Musicals" .

Redy;

You're right. I think "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has been running in Harvard Square over 30 years now. At least it still was as late as 2000. It plays at midnight - and there's a whole "society" of people who dress up and re-enact the whole movie while it's playing. For me - I've never seen it. I did light the stage show of it in a college production 3 years ago.

Another long running cult show was "The King Of Hearts" - with Alan Bates and Genevieve Bujou. It ran every weekend at the old Orson Welles in Cambridge every week-end at 12:00 until the year the theater burnt down and didn't get restored. I believe that movie came out in the 60's.

If anything - it is a satirical analogy of Frankenstein - which itself - was an analogy. Comparing it to biblical themes - though, is a stretch.

Biblical? No. Just sort of religious. Not the story itself, but people earlier in the topic were talking about the fans sort of being like Christian churchgoers.

Come on, people. It's called a CULT classic! I think it would be strange if people weren't acting in this way. Any cult classic movie has a following like this one. The Rocky Horror fans are just more flamboyant with their lingerie and fishnets.
