I watched you
walk away
knowing I would
wonder
where you were going
was I
still with you
in your thoughts
your heart
your soul?

I counted
each step you took
foolishly believing that the next
or the one after that
would be where
you turned around
and came back to me

I wanted to beg you
to stop
and think about our love's first day
our laughter
our conversations
your life's story
and mine
we were happy
or so we seemed to be

I watched you
walk away
knowing I would
wonder
if I would be a part of your
future stories
when you laughed
. . . with someone else
