Tennessee school district bans all flags, including American Flag MyFoxMemphis DICKSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A Tennessee school district is banning all flags, including Old Glory. School leaders in Dickson County decided, after a summer of controversy surrounding the Confederate flag, the wise thing to do would be to ban all flags and banners. Some students are angry as they feel their patriotism is being compromised. School leaders said there is a right and wrong way to show American pride: "It's not an unpatriotic act by any means because we have a number of ways in which students do learn how to be patriotic and express American pride." One student said, "I just think that's a right...it's freedom of expression and I don't think you should be able to take that away from us." Students said they were told they would get kicked out if they bring an American flag onto school property. So far, school leaders say they haven't had any issues. |

This actually angers me..
When we start taking all the things America stands for away and Yes IMO the Flag does have a representation in our country and has a right to stay. Then we no longer will be America.. Each country IMO has a right to believe what they want to. I am more angered by this that it seems so many want to come here to begin a new life and as soon as they have they want their country here also. If their country was so great then why did they leave? I also have to wonder when this is going to stop.. I greatly fear in oh say 50 years someone is going to wake up in this country and try to remember what America is and there won't be anyone around to tell them. |

This smacks of petty, resentment based passive aggressive protest, to me.
I charge that these officials know perfectly well that there's zero validity to their choice of actions, and this is nothing more than an ingenuous effort on their part to get support for them to openly use symbols which they know full well are entirely inappropriate. What they want, is for the real American Patriots in the country to join them blindly, and help them to go back to ignoring the real meaning behind what they were supporting previously. It's a childish game of pretending that they can't show or support pride in America itself, unless they are also allowed to support the defeated people who actively tried to destroy the United States: the Confederacy. I suggest that we recognize that this is, whether you are on the Confederate side of things or not, a declaration on their part that they are INCAPABLE of separating out one lesson from another. I would fire them all for avowing their incompetence to act as educators. |

SitkaRains quote,
This actually angers me.. When we start taking all the things America stands for away and Yes IMO the Flag does have a representation in our country and has a right to stay. Then we no longer will be America. ----------------- We went from THESE United States Of North America ... to.. THE United States Of America... & now many just say America or Merica. * Google USA.. & see what you get, & don't get * Removing any state flag, enrages me & breaks my heart simultaneously. As a new comer here, I made a thread about States that want to seceed from the Union. (Which, I believe only one other person took seriously, that this Administration, seen as a threat, .... & then... Conferderate battle Flag issue ) Well, removing the States flag is sn attempt to remove their symbol. Just like the Confederate battle flag. It attempted to remove their identify, history, heritage & individually, as well as unity. In a conscious & subconscious, but very real way. Just as much as removing each states rights to govern itself. Psychologicaly stripping & snatching independence, with the illusion of unity & equality & fairness. Flag removal (including Religious ones), gun removal etc.. coming to a NWO/Walmart near you Oh look!...a squirrel! .., don't look at the man behind the curtain. * Dramatic Music * |

Good. What does a flag have to do with education? Reading, writing, 'rithmatic, and flags? I could see having flags if there was still a pledge of allegiance, but that's not really allowed in schools anymore, is it? I just hope they start banning all children and adults from schools. They seem to be causing all the problems. "It's not an unpatriotic act by any means because we have a number of ways in which students do learn how to be patriotic and express American pride."
Why are they learning how to be patriotic at school? Screw patriotism at school, if you HAVE to teach them something teach them to read the fine print in contracts. That will serve them more in life than any school based patriotism course. Why are they being taught how to express American pride? And which American pride? North, Central, or South? African, hispanic, latino, irish, native, asian, meso, which American hyphenated? Or all of them? Then what else is there time for? Selfies in the bathroom? One student said, "I just think that's a right...it's freedom of expression and I don't think you should be able to take that away from us."
There's no "right of expression," expression and exercise are 2 different things. So there's another example of school failure. But if they taught the constitution it "should" have come up that it reads "congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech..." But the courts and congress have pretty much decided that means "congress shall make no law, unless they feel like it." Hate speech, racism, yelling fire in theaters, removing the "n-word" in historical works of literature. There are all sorts of laws and policies that "violate" the whole concept of the absolute of "congress shall make no law." So...pretty much any "first amendment!" or "we have the right to 'expression!'" argument is worthless. Hell with flags. We need some kind of "American" gang signs. |

Political correctness gone into orbit. You can't wear something or hold something or say something, just in case it offends someone. In this case it's about what the American flag is "saying", in the minds of those who see it as supposedly offensive.
at the end of the day, what is said is of little consequence, everyone has something to say! This train of thought basically says that you can't have an opinion in case it offends someone! But when you realize EVERY opinion will offend Somebody, it basically tells you that you have No right to ANY opinion. Any don't be fooled, that is exactly what the message IS. You are NOT entitled to any opinion ... unless the government gives it to you first ! |

A few years back, SCrOTUS ruled, that burning the U.S. flag, was an act of "free speech".
How odd it is, that properly displaying the flag, isn't thought of as free speech. |

Facts and case summary for Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989). Flag burning constitutes symbolic speech that is protected by the First Amendment.
The majority of the Court, according to Justice William Brennan, agreed with Johnson and held that flag burning constitutes a form of "symbolic speech" that is protected by the First Amendment. The majority noted that freedom of speech protects actions that society may find very offensive, but society's outrage alone is not justification for suppressing free speech. Another one of SCrOTUS rulings that I disagree with. |

though they both involve the 'flag' its two different situations really,,
one is about an INDIVIDUALs property and their right to do what they want to the other is about a community property and which part of that community should be supported, or not,,, |

though they both involve the 'flag' its two different situations really,, one is about an INDIVIDUALs property and their right to do what they want to the other is about a community property and which part of that community should be supported, or not,,, seems that if they are doing something dangerous to themselves and others/property, it should be banned... i guess nobody caught themselves on fire or burned anything down while doing it... |
