It all boils down to a complete inability to evaluate talent, and to use that talent in a proper and productive manner.
A really good example would be the Mark Grace situation. Here's a guy playing first base for the Cubs, for years and years, hitting .300 pretty much every season, always hitting third behind decent hitters (one of whom was usually Sandberg), and Grace would pretty consistently drive in 70 runs a year. Given that same set of parameters, my grandmother would have driven in 90, and a real major league hitter would have had 110. Grace might have been the worst hitter with men on base I've ever seen. I watched almost every Cubs game one year, and I could literally count on two fingers the number of meaningful runs the guy drove in. He was a star in those 12-1 games, but if the score was even close, he might as well have gone up there with a broom handle. This is nothing new. Bill Buckner was exactly the same kind of hitter as a Cub. Useless when it meant anything. How far back do you want to go? The trade of Bill Madlock, who was young, and had just won 2 consecutive batting titles, to the Giants for a washed up Bobby Murcer.... Or how about hiring a manager whose agenda seems to be to make his staring pitchers' arms fall off? At least they had the (eventual) common sense to get rid of that guy....but after how many years? I like Piniella, he's a smart guy, and he knows the game. I don't think the rest of the management team cares too much, though, as long as Wrigley is full every game and the TV money keeps flowing in. And I liked the signing of Soriano, but, let's face it, he's an outfielder like I'm a 16th century harpsichord builder. |

I love all the analyzations for the threads these days. Seriously... it's nice to read more than just one or 2 sentences...
Alas the Cubs will only add to my current depression So I won't talk about them here. Just let me crawl back into my little hole and let me know when it's over.... |

I was watching the Cleveland-Boston game last night, and they announced that Dusty Baker is the new manager of the Cincinnati Reds. I'll tell you, if I was a Reds pitcher, I would be demanding a trade right now! How many Kerry Wood/Mark Prior-type "arms-fall-off" injuries will end pitching careers in Cincinnati??
Anybody ever read "The Peter Priciple"? Baker is a perfect example. Good player rewarded by being elevated to his level of incompetence as a manager.... |
