India Heat Wave Kills 750 In 5 Weeks

HYDERABAD, India (AP) — More than 750 people have died in southern India since the middle of April as soaring summer temperatures scorch the country, officials said Tuesday.

The southeastern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana have been hit the hardest.
More than 550 people have died from the unrelenting heat in Andhra Pradesh since May 13, state Deputy Chief Minister Nimmakayala Chinna Rajappa said.

A top state official in Telangana, Bhambal Ram Meena, said about 215 heat-related deaths have been reported since April 15.

Daily temperatures in both states have hit between 45 and 48 degrees Celsius (113 and 118 degrees Fahrenheit). Officials have urged people to stay hydrated and remain indoors as much as possible.
Blistering hot, dry winds have also swept across most parts of north and central India, wilting plants and forcing people to avoid the outdoors. In the cities, large crowds of office workers gather around stalls selling cold fruit drinks.

Weather officials say the sweltering temperatures are likely to continue in southern India for at least another week. Monsoon rains, expected to arrive in the southern state of Kerala in the first week of June, should bring some respite. The monsoon season runs through September as the rains gradually cover the entire country.

"The rains which have eluded us for the last couple of years have created serious drought conditions," said state minister K.T. Rama Rao in Telangana, which was carved out of Andhra Pradesh as a separate state just last year.

"This is unprecedented ... so there is a little bit of panic," he said. "Hopefully the monsoon will be on time. Hopefully we will receive rain very, very soon."

HYDERABAD, India – Despite hopes that weekend thundershowers would help end a raging heat wave in southern India, the rain brought only limited relief as the death toll since mid-April approached 2,200.

Officials said Sunday that the intense heat was likely to continue for another day in worst-hit Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states.

Daytime temperatures hovered between 113 and 116 Fahrenheit in some parts of the two states over the weekend, 5 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, said K.Y. Reddy, a director of the Meteorological Center in the Telangana state capital of Hyderabad. Thundershowers brought relief to people in other areas.

Andhra Pradesh has been hit the hardest, with 1,636 people dying in the state from the heat over the past month and a half, a government statement said. Another 561 people have died in neighboring Telangana, said Sada Bhargavi, a state disaster management commissioner.

As heart wrenching as this is - I'm slow to pray for rain for this region; lots of humans prayed for rain for the drought stricken parts of Texas in 2011 and now the rain cycle seems to be on a 'NON-STOP CYCLE' and floods are killing many!

Dang - climate change is occurring globally and it's really horrible to stand around and be a bystander to the disasters!

Core samples from Arctic Ice has proven that the Global Warming events from the past were driven by earth events {ie. volcanic activity - meter strikes} from the amount of ash left in the frozen arctic ice layers...but these events are our own 'MAN MADE' escalated version of disasters that have caused the weather patterns to change & shift!

I sincerely hope you live inland coastal down there in TX...what was beach front property will/is fast becoming gulf coast reclamation!

In the new study, which appears at Nature Communications, Chipperfield’s team used a 3D atmospheric chemistry transport model to show what the atmosphere would have looked like if no controls were placed on the production and release of chlorine- and bromine-containing ozone-depleting substances (ODSs).

Their work shows that the ozone hole in the Antarctic - which reached its peak in 1993 and has been declining ever since -�� would have grown 40% bigger by 2013. What'��s more, large holes would have opened-up intermittently above the Arctic, including some large enough to affect northern Europe. Ozone decline over northern hemisphere middle latitudes would have continued, more than doubling to approximately 15% by now.

Our health. In the most populated areas of Australia and New Zealand, which currently have the highest mortality rates from skin cancer, the model predicts that surface UV could have increased by 8–12% without the treaty; and in Northern Europe, increases would have exceeded 14% by 2013. In addition, the continued reduction in atmospheric emissions of chlorine and bromine should eventually translate into an increase in stratospheric ozone, reducing the incidence of skin cancer and preserving the temperature structure of the atmosphere, with important long-term consequences for circulation and climate.

Hey, I'm the first to admit that 'I'm no scientist but my interest in this goes way back and the ratio skin cancer greatly concerns me'!

And I read everything about this CLIMATE CHANGE/Global Warming!

heat kills more humans than all other meteorological phenomena combined.

- cyclones
- tornadoes
- hurricanes
- cold
- blizzard
- hail
- lightning

For those that like to conserve energy, and be more comfortable, a brief comment on cars:

A few decades ago, stock car race hoods were often painted flat black. The theory was, less glare for the driver.
But one race team tried an experiment, and discovered, by losing the flat black hood, and painting the hood the same as the rest of the car, it dropped the cabin temperature by a reported 30F degrees.

So, if you live where your car has an air conditioner which you use; you may both save $money, and feel more comfortable in a light colored car both inside and out.

WOW...climate specialists are saying the El Nino waves aren't curving as they once did; these past few years they've been straight long bans across our planet---things are changing all around the world. UGH

This is true about the El Nino when I used to commercial fish of the northern California coast the el Nino was where the tuna bite was and its nothing to speak of this was from about 1990 to 2005 when after that the bite was gone.... We ended going belly up when our trawler got swamped in port at Crescent city from a tsunami from Japan..

i don't disagree, they found an actual problem and fixed it, good for them... but what they also learned from that is that people want to take care of the planet, or are at least concerned about it... so now they use the fear tactics again, buy telling us the doom and gloom about global warming and made a billion dollar business by keeping people paranoid... the true fact of the matter, the earths mean temperature hasn't changed in about 18 years, up or down....


look up the heat wave in 1980, in dallas area... temps were about the same as in india right now, for a longer time... even here in Houston, about 3 years ago, the temps were around 108 for about a month, with no rain that summer at all... all the doom and gloomers were crying about the serious drought, and it would take ten years for the lake levels to get back up... they were up the next year...
