Topic: Does Islam allow wife beating

Some husbands are violent and they say that the Quran allows them to beat their wives. Is there any logical explanation given regarding men being allowed to beat their wives, as stated in Surat An-Nisaa, verse 34? Well, lets check this....

Quran is very clear on this issue. Almighty Allah says: "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more strength than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore, the righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in the husband's absence what Allah would have them to guard. As to those women on whose part you fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance); for Allah is most High and Great (above you all). If you fear a breach between them twain, appoint (two) arbiters, one from his family and the other from hers. If they wish for peace, Allah will cause their reconciliation; for Allah has full knowledge and is acquainted with all things." (Quran: An-Nisaa 34-35)

It is important to read the section fully. One should not take part of the verse and use it to justify one's own misconduct. This verse neither permits violence nor condones it. It guides us to ways to handle delicate family situation with care and wisdom. The word "beating" is used in the verse, but it does not mean "physical abuse". The Prophet (p.b.u.h.) explained it "dharban ghayra mubarrih" which means "a light tap that leaves no mark". He further said that face must be avoided. Some other scholars are of the view that it is no more than a light touch by siwak, or toothbrush.

Generally, the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) used to discourage his followers from taking even this measure. He never hit any female, and he used to say that the best of men are those who do not hit their wives. In one Hadith he expressed his extreme repulsion from this behavior and said, "How does anyone of you beat his wife as he beats the stallion camel and then embrace (sleep with) her?” (Al-Bukhari, English Translation, vol. 8, Hadith 68, pp. 42-43)

It is also important to note that even this "light strike" mentioned in the verse is not to be used to correct some minor problem, but it is permissible to resort to only in a situation of some serious moral misconduct when admonishing the wife fails, and avoiding from sleeping with her would not help. If this disciplinary action can correct a situation and save the marriage, then one should use it."

In another Hadith the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) is reported to have said:
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wassalam said: "Do not beat your wife." He also said: "Do not strike your wife in the face." The expiation for striking one's slave in the face is to set him or her free on the spot, but what expiation is there for striking one's wife? The Prophet salallahu alaihi wassalam condemned the man who beats his wife in the day and then approaches to have sexual intercourse with her at night." And to beat her to the extent of inflicting serious injury is enough grounds for her to obtain divorce from the judge.

Allah Almighty knows best.

This is a loaded question.

Perhaps it needs to be asked, "Does anybody ever deserve any physical retribution for engaging in a criminal act?"

Do children ever need a spanking?

Should I stop that rapist and land him a right hook?

Whom else should my wife sleep with...? I've got to go to work now the rest of my bastard children need to eat!

Islam is not just for learning & believing. Islam is for learning, believing & following. May ALLAH make it easy for us to obey his Commands. Aameen.

Yes, Islam must be practiced and followed but the question here is to what extent must an Islamic or Quranic request be implemented?

This is why, I personal don't refer to any hadiths. (Too Much Conflict)

The Quran is the message(the word of God), and the Hadith is the explanation of the message by the Messenger himself. Hadith is sunnah, the example by Prophet s.a.w. himself. Hadith is considered to be second to the Quran. It is impossible to understand the Quran without reference to the Hadith and it is impossible to explain a hadith without relating it to the Quran.

Allah commanded the following
{Say: Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, but if you turn away, he (the Prophet) is only responsible for the duty placed on him (i.e. to convey Allah's Message) and you for that placed on you. If you obey him, you shall be on the right guidance. The Messenger's duty is only to convey (the message) in a clear way.} (An-Nur 24:54)

This is were we differ. I'm preoccupied completely with using only the Quran and the Bible for all my references.

The young Brother whom I first met and rekindled my interest in Islam was so entrenched with these Hadiths that when he quoted one, and I asked him if this was a Hadith or from the Quran...? He couldn't remember! This immediately through-up a danger-flag for me, personally.

Brother... we are Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. ummah...
Not Jesus alaihi salam. Yes, we admit Jesus is the Messenger, but we are not his ummah. So, we like it or not, we must refer the hadith & Quran. But not a Bible.

To me both Jesus and Muhammad are the same community or ummah.

What is more, the Quran, itself says that this is a recitation confirming that which has gone before. (Namely The Biblical Texts)

Really, if we don't use the Bible writings, despite how abrogated they may very well be, how would either Jew or Christian ever have cause to believe in the Quran. spock

No Hadith has ever contributed to my advancement in the understanding of Islam. In fact, they only ever served as a stumbling-block for me.

Which makes me wonder... Why, would the Muslim Community want to deliberately make their religion more-difficult to understand than it need be?

The real Bible was actually burnt by a priest hundreads yrs back and that's why today there's so many bibles with volume numbers which have diffrent concepts and teachings. Quran is the only book which guides you to light. but doesnt mean we must reject hadith, weak or other type of any hadith.

If all of the Hebrew and Christian texts have been burnt, and if all there is in the way of Biblical text is abrogated... Then why would Quran say that 'this is a recitation that is a confirmation of that which has gone before'?

None, of the Bible texts we have today have changed much at all since about 380 A.D. The Quran was manifest in the 600s... So, what is the pertinence of the Quran having had mentioned this at all? what

New heading will be started, as the conversation up till now with Violet73 has been somewhat unrelated.

As for nzsxy, should we ignore what the Quran has to say on the subject...? Are You familiar with what the Quran has to say regarding this subject...? Are You sure you're a Muslim?

I've decided to look-up some verses from the Quran that are pertinent to this subject, no-matter how shameful it is to relate to.

Surah 4: 34
Surah 24: 2

Nzsxy...

I've just finished reading Your own Mingle Profile...

Fornicating with Women isn't a very Islamic, and I sincerely doubt You're able to bother reading the verses from the Quran I listed.

So strange yaa shaikh...quran dose not allow to regect a historical fact for aproving the quran,s statement in any case...and specialy if that fact is 100% aproved ..and the fact is that the bible is today in our hand is not that quran says about that...its almost 70% changed and now its dificult to recognize that which part of bible is actual and which is courpted ..
so thats the major reason for sending a new book and making its secure from,,tehreef,,...and the quranic verses which is saying,,عندھم,,are mean that real torah and the book of eesa a.s....not this bible...
We have to beleive ...that books are from allah..and quran and that books are hujjat for us...not bible of ezra and his 70 friends
