Church Mouse

Why is it white swans do not a pond make?
Nor the coarser billed upon a lake?

While there atop a branch in the morning still,
the sad whistling and goings on of the whippoorwill,

- All heard inside an old, ancient church with it's graveyard there,
Adorned with gracious spiraling steeple and cross atop,
Meant to pierce God's Holy air,

Hidden away behind a corner flower pot a frightened church mouse stirs,
As the night outside howls with winds that sweep across the evergreen firs . . .

( Oh well, like that church mouse, I guess we all must learn to endure. )
