What do you people think about it? Will it be a better option than our BlackBerry /iphone?

Don't know, is it GPS trackable while in flight like the BlackBerry?

It's a Google product. Evil. That means in every piece of swappable hardware they have back doors and trackers.

I just did, what a load of rubbish. I don't buy a phone and mess about putting it together.

Why have a dog and bark yourself.

This is complete and total nonsense. Did you know that its only because of the, um, strategic 'generosity' of Google that anyone can even run a modern, powerful, rich-ecosystem mobile OS and be confident that they are not being tracked? I'm talking about AOSP based OSes.

See, Google, Apple, and Microsoft ALL track people with their mobile OSes. But only Google has made it possible to have full transparency and control while still running a modern and powerful mobile OS with a rich ecosystem (Sorry Ubuntu Mobile, FirefoxOS, and Sailfish). There are AOSP-based OSes that give you complete control and transparency unmatched by iOS, windows phone, and blackberry (edit: also unmatched by google's normal tracking android).

So don't be so quick to assume that anything associated with google will have back doors and trackers.

If this is a real concern for you, check out BlackPhone.

Project Ara is a hardware platform. Every component of the hardware can be made by any company that follows the spec. Google most likely will get out of the module business as soon as they can - they want to create the platform and ecosystem, not sell modules.

One reason that I'm excited about Project Ara is because it will give me more control over my hardware, and make it EASIER to have privacy, when I want it.

Project Ara phones will be sold as complete units.

This will be the normal way of buying an Ara phone.

You won't have to put your phone together, unless you are a geek or a maker and that's your thing.

But what you CAN do, with an Ara phone, is get a most cost effective phone tailored to your personal interests.

If you are really into photography, you can get a high end camera.
If you want the latest and greatest phone, but don't care about photography, you can get a lower grade camera and save some money, which you can spend on another aspect of the phone.

If you travel a lot and need incredible battery life, you can get a battery optimized screen and lots of battery modules.

If you prefer to have a 4k screen and forget about battery life, that will be your option.

Have you ever had a great cell phone, then wanted to switch carriers only to realize: the other carrier doesn't fully support your existing phone? To get full data speeds, you'll have to get a whole new phone? No more with Ara. Just swap out the cell module.

I hope someone makes an eink screen for Ara. I read on my devices all the time, and regular screens use a lot more battery than eink. So I bought an ereader, which eventually broke. :(

Imagine taking all of the power and functionality already present in your phone and making it available in a new ereader - but doing so for LESS than the cost of an ereader.

That's what I hope we will get if someone makes an eink screen for Ara. You could swap between them as needed. Play games on the battery sucking color screen, then switch to energy efficient reading for a while on the eink screen.
