Gypsy41,
Mentally Retarded is the correct terminology. The shortened form of "Retard" is in insult. The condition is called Mental Retardation, those who have the condition (diminished IQ) are called Mentally Retarded. Hope that clears it up for you. |

Its politically incorrect to say that!!! You would NEVER see that here.
WE call it mentally challenged, not mentally retarded. |
|
|

iTS like calling a black person a nigger.......totally backwards thinking if you ask me.
Are we not here to make our world better not go back to stupidity???? |

Gypsy,

Mental Retardation is the term of the illness and it has many different "politically correct" terms applied to it. Mentally challeged can be applied to too many different conditions, I prefer something that is more descriptive and describes the persons actual limitations rather than leaving it up to the listener to figure out what is meant.

so you agree that the sign was ok????
<--------shakes head and walks away!!! |

I've gotta agree with Spider on this. He is correct with his terms, and what is and isn't considered an insult.

And you wonder why there is so much racism in your country!!!

Gypsy41,
I have heard a pediactric psychologist with two masters in psychology use the term "Mentally Retarded" when discusing a child with an IQ of 70, so I'll take her word on it. I will try to avoid using the term in the forums, because I don't want to offend anyone more than the fact that I breath already does. |

I have never met people as backwards as the modern American.

When I was in Eastern State there was a sign that said "Mentally Ill Quarters ---> I didn't find it offensive, it told me where I was going. Does that count?

lmaooooooooooooo omg my statement still stands!!!

lets get it straight.
A black kid had to ask permission to sit under a tree which is on public property because he was afraid of being attacked otherwise. Why has nobody addressed that? After the noose issue happened black kids did a protest, and sat under the tree and later a black kid was cornered and attacked by several white kids, but no arrests were made. Then one of the white attackers was beat up by 6 black kids and now the law flys into action. This is a clear case of racial bias, whites often have trouble relating to this since they are usually the ones commiting thes acts. |

yes....I too, was wondering why anyone has to ask permission to sit under a tree, but from some of the answers here, I don't have to wonder why!!!
|
|
|
|
Well, from what I see from my backwater island of Ireland, I never did wonder.
