my friend said she'd rather he see her while she's still able to recognize him. their family unity is admirable |

That is prudent. I don't know how many people I have known that had to leave work and "rush to the hospital" because their loved one had passed. I always wondered why they didn't leave work while their loved one was living and be with them when they passed. What is the hurry after?
