Topic: The Valley of Mist | |
---|---|
Walking through a valley of mist, I listen to the music of the crunching leaves. The twigs seem to crumble as I listen intently for a sound that lets me know I am not alone. There is a plane overhead somewhere that seems to be looking for something. I hear the engine race as it comes closer, yet I am unable to see it. It seems to climb higher from the misty Valley I am walking in. To the right I hear something scurry, could it be a groundhog? Maybe one of the deer that frequent this area has been disturbed by my tramping. Slowly I turn into the direction of disturbance, low and behold I see him. He is magnificent, He stands almost as tall as I do and seems to be looking my way, He turns his head as I gasp, and he stares directly at me, almost knowing he is the king in this area. His rack is eighteen or twenty points and he bows as if to show off. Slowly he looks at me almost as if I were a meal on a spit over a fire. He grunts as he shakes his head, as if to say hello, as the plane comes closer he turns away and with one leap he disappears into the mist of the valley. I wonder what other secrets this forest holds, should I stand still and wait for another encounter, or should I trek deeper into this forest? I hear the stillness of the morning mist, as it deadens the sounds of the forest. I find myself searching for something in the distance and see a wisp of something in the distance. I strain to see what it is, and to my surprise I see a clearing on the top of the knoll, the grass seems to be steaming and the mist that surrounds me is cool, yet warming. What is this place? I walk to the edge of the clearing hoping to see the other side. From the edge I see a pond it seems to be teaming with life as the mosquito’s dance across it. The water breaks as a fish chases the bugs across the water, at the edge is a raccoon, searching the rocks for something, it doesn’t see me as I stop to watch him. He is intently tracking something in the water; with a quickness rarely seen he scoops something up, a crawdad, and quickly grabs it in his teeth. The raccoon almost grins as he looks at me and scurries away to eat the tasty morsel he found. Who am I too see these things? Who am I who is unable to find the other side of this clearing? Where is this leading me? Slowly I stretch as she tells me its time to get up. The memory of the mist is still within my mind, it’s soothing me as I wake to the morning air. I am looking forward to another day of beauty in the Valley I have learned to call home, its peace encompasses me as I open the door and see the deer and other animals scurry away at the sight of this man. I am in awe of the things I have found, and I am thankful for those I call friends. I thank God for allowing me to live another day. By his grace I live to tell a tale. G |
