Topic: How (And where) racism lingers,,, | |

The majority of America's racists live where slavery was most common a new study has revealed.
The University of Rochester has found that despite the abolition of slavery 150 years ago, white Southerners who live in the Cotton Belt where the economy was build on slaves and plantations are much more likely to express negative attitudes toward blacks than their fellow Southerners who live where there were less slaves. Indeed, these white people are also more likely to identify as Republican and to hold opinions on race-related political policies such as affirmative action. The study by is believed to be the first to demonstrate the lasting effects of slavery on racial attitudes in the South. ........ But how is it possible that an institution so long outlawed continues to influence views in the 21st century? 'Before mechanization, cotton was not really economically viable without massive amounts of cheap labor,' explains Maya Sen. who worked on the study. She makes it clear that after the Civil War southern landowners had to push old slave hands back to work and to keep their wages low, just to push a profit. 'Whereas slavery only required a majority of (powerful) whites in the state to support it, widespread repression and political violence required the support and involvement of entire communities,' the authors write. Lynchings in the South were highest where cotton was produced and by the time mechanization arrived in the 1930s and removed the need to exploit black workers racist attitudes were sadly engrained. Why does anyone care what an English tabloid rag has to say about the United States of America? Maybe they should report on their own countries history of participation in racism and slavery.
I'm sure Nelson Mandela can give some insight and an opinion about who propagated more slavery and racism, the US or the UK. SMH |

SMH condescend much? obiously I 'got' that the site was a UK site and therefore apparently not credible or significant to you that's why I posted an AMERICAN site with the same information the information originates from the University Of Rochester, its just repeated across the web on different websites,,, the study was not done in or by anyone in the UK, but by americans,, and I don't live in the UK or Africa, so I am discussing where I live,,, |
