I set out walking in the dark
So quiet
So blind
So uncertain about my next step

No moon
No stars
Feeling as I do when
I enter the house without lights on

It is late, very late
My neighbors are
Sleeping or
Having sex
Or watching TV I suspect

I walk blindly
Waiting for my eyes to adjust
Two headlights blind me
Then all is dark and quiet

I set out walking in the dark
I hear my footsteps
I hear the frogs
I hear voices in the distance

The voices
I listen closely
Is what I hear from TV
Or unscripted improvisation?
