The Years


As they pass
they seem to remain
clinging to me
as if their permanence is as much a part of me
as the breaths I’ve taken through the years

Not sure I would change a thing
even as I feel them
changing me
all the memories
the beautiful laughter
along with the sorrow
of different days
they’ve given me the perfect short story
to complement
the wonderfully long life I’ve had

And as they continue to pass
and I look forward
to looking back
and thinking about
the people I’ve met
the ones I’ve loved
and the ones
who’ve touched me
I hold them close to my soul
hoping
that they know
I appreciate them as I do the years
