I love dogs
and they love me
they are a source of affection
and apparent loyalty

beauty and love
with unbounded forgiveness
they depend upon us
our guidance and persistence

but such loyalty, remember,
only goes so far
bought by a piece of meat
or maybe a tasty treat
found in your ex-lover's car

they have no need to think
or question any behavior
getting into what they like
chasing after the new day's flavors

simple to understand
and that is why we love them
never forget to give
the care and respect
that they deserve
it's our responsibility
