Topic: Are You Living Your Dreams?

Nope; not really living my dream as like Texas; I need more money. The one thing stopping me is my age and education. To get a decent job; you must have a University education and anyone over 40 here in Calgary has a hard time getting hired because of their age. Perhaps; I should think like Old Sage and really just start my own business so I am not at the mercy of these a-hole employers.

If you keep telling yourself that, then that is what you believe and if that is what you believe that is what you create.

Yes, start your own business. Why would you want to work for someone else anyway?

Why allow any belief or any situation hold you back from going after your dreams?

Stop making excuses. Go for it.

You only have your life ... live it on your terms.

Its not easy starting your own business as I need the Capital. Incidentally; its not me saying this about the age; its the employers.

If they are actually saying it, then you can sue them on age discrimination.

I saw in our town where the county hired a young good looking blond girl fresh out of college to be in charge of the extension office and passed up a man who had years of experience. She could not do the job and was not qualified. They hired her because she was wearing a skirt and was blond.

Now she is gone and the man has been hired. He is doing a good job because he has experience and knows what to do.

Do not accept the belief that they will not hire you because of your age. What you believe and what you put your attention on is what you create.

You are correct that I can sue but it will take years to go to court as there are hundreds of cases of age discrimination. I know this because a friend of mine works for labor standards and she is swamped with these cases.

Maybe so, but if you are qualified for the job and they actually tell you they can't hire you because of your age, sometimes the threat of a lawsuit can get their attention.

I guess it depends on how busy the courts are how long it takes.

This is so true. I challenged the city of Calgary on this issue but they denied it. I told them to look at the people they were hiring for 911 dispatch and not one was over 30 years old. My friend works there and with my military experience as a cop, firefighting, and first aid; I am definitely qualified for the job. There was an incident where two 50+ women were hired and had health issues. Now they are off work just as often as the 30 year olds. laugh

Self employment is always rewarding. It is always nice to have a dream and work on it.

The first thing to do is keep your overhead very low.
And know how much to charge for your product.

If a product costs you $1.00 to create, you should get $10.00 for it believe it or not. You have to mark it up enough to make it worth your while.

Here are some of my ideas for making money when I first came to town.

Furniture refinishing, dog sitting and dog walking, house cleaning, home health care, selling paintings, tarot card readings, selling tarot cards, google adsense on websites, painting classes, writing articles, (sell them on line), building websites for other small businesses.

I can sew and create just about anything but I need to find a niche and market something that isn't already saturated in the market place. Also; I need time to do these things and working a full time job as well as maintaining a house doesn't give me much free time other than the weekends.

You have information that has a value to others. You can blog about sewing and it won't cost you a dime. If you can make patterns, you could sell them as well and just email them to people. You could host ads for places to buy materials and supplies. You could make videos and upload them to youtube.

Time? It only takes a few hours a week. But, you have to be dedicated. Work on your blog instead of posting in forums.

Good idea. I didn't know it took so little time to do this. I thought it would take at least a 40 hour week. Thanks for the tip.

Look at this.

You could do this but with sewing instead of furniture building.

As I mentioned in a previous thread regarding our perceptions of 'reality' or dreams, i have come to the ironic conclusion that we all seem to be living in a dream; most certainly a series of random delusions, the only difference for myself is that I'm not naked and tied to a bedpost of some beautiful vixen at best not even her radiator...; it's like being in a weird film and there is no refund on my ticket... and when, but momentarily awakened, it is by my own screams; perhaps I have 'issues'...ohwell

If not, what's stopping you?

I am currently not living my dreams. I was for a long time, but things changed and I must have more money.

I will get back to living my dreams soon enough.

Oh heck no, I only remember my vivid nightmare dreams and I have no intention of living those!
