TexasScoundrel, so what if the man had started attacking the woman? would you refrain from doing the right thing because of your fear of a law suit or being arrested? Don't you have any faith in the system? wink

I stand by my statement. I was actually arrested once for defending a woman in the tattoo shop I owned. I spent the night in jail and over $2000 in lawyer fees. Ended up with a year of probation and an criminal record.

NEVER AGAIN!

The system sucks.

I think getting involved in squabbles between two people is probably not a good idea most of the time.

But in some rare cases I think others should get involved. If some guy is assaulting or raping someone and you have the ability to hit them over the head with a bat, I say go for it.

I say call 911 and stay on the phone with them until the cops get there. Tell them everything you see and let them handle the rest. It's their job, not mine.

I disagree. Someone, meanwhile, could get murdered.

The cops might show up to prevent a crime in your neighborhood in a two second flash, but twenty minutes waiting for a cop to show up while someone is stabbing a woman or abducting a child is not going to be much help.

There will come a day when they might take two hours to show up.

There is no law that says you are required to help someone else but to stand there holding a cell phone while a person is murdered or raped is to me, immoral.

The courts disagree with you. If I get involved in a physical altercation with another person (unless I'm defending myself or my property) I'm committing a crime. This is how the law views it because they don't want untrained citizens taking the law into their own hands.

Besides, I don't know if the guy is armed. If I get involved there could just as easily be two dead bodies for the cops to deal with. If you want to call me immoral, that's okay by me.

Personally; I am the type that would get involved in helping someone even at the risk of a lawsuit. Last summer; a guy mugged a woman as I was sitting in my car. Myself and three other citizens chased the guy down; cornered him; and held him until police arrived.

The courts do not disagree with me.

And even if they did, I do not respect or recognize "the court" if it tells me not to help someone in trouble because that would go against my moral compass.

It is also true that to disobey the order of a superior officer (in the military) is an offense, but if an officer commands you to kill someone like a village of innocent women and children, that you have the moral responsibility to disobey.

I hold my moral responsibility above any court.

(And if I saw a man assaulting a young child and I had a weapon, I would use it on him without hesitation.)

I am more of a knight than you are apparently. bigsmile

Bravo. And I doubt if you were arrested for doing it.

Nope; did not get arrested and actually the police thanked us.

If he had tried to do something to you after you got out of your car, then yes, I would say someone should have stopped.

But why would you get out of your car rather than drive away??

I couldn't there was a red light and a train coming. I was stuck there for about 10 minutes.

What started this string was a man jaywalked in front of you while driving. You had to slow down for a red light because a train was coming by the above quote.

If you had to stop any ways why not slowed more or stop sooner so the individual could cross the road. Regardless you still had to stop for the red light and train.

No; the light was green and it changed red after he jaywalked in front of me; plus he just stood there for a few moments which at that point the lights started turning. So, I wouldn't have had to stop if he didn't jaywalk in front of me. He also caused another driver to slam on the brakes and almost hit me.

Allow me to re-phrase, the court I was in disagrees with you.

And you're right. I'm no ones knight. I'll leave the hero stuff to the guys that get paid to do it.
