Topic: Edward Said, Champion of Justice | |
---|---|
Exceptional scholars are typically celebrated in the West. Said was the recipient of many academic awards, but the lack of official US acknowledgement of his talent was due mainly to his tireless efforts fighting the most powerful and organized single-issue group in America.
For instance, the charge of anti-Semitism has become a psychological weapon in the hands of Zionists, who use it to numb Israel’s opponents and stifle its critics. http://www.redressonline.com/2012/10/edward-said-champion-of-justice/ |

Said questioned this dilemma extensively in his 2003 book Culture and Resistance, pointing out that “there is a great difference between acknowledging Jewish oppression and using that as a cover for the oppression of another people”.

At a time when it became convenient for Western intellectuals to ignore Israel’s brutality to avoid the wrath of national Jewish organizations, Said refused to be silenced. For him, “injustice was to be rectified, not rationalized”.

Just in case someone might rubbish Edward Said.
I have read many of Said’s books and confess that most are not easy to read. His subject writing is certain to challenge the most erudite and intellectual reader. |

Just in case someone might rubbish Edward Said. I have read many of Said’s books and confess that most are not easy to read. His subject writing is certain to challenge the most erudite and intellectual reader. It is not surprising you think that someone might rubbish Edward Said because most of what Edward Said said was rubbish! Said is dead and his neo-liberal US and Israel bashing is now passe. Only a few intellectual-wanna-bes and hangers on from the 80s are still trying to blame the world's ailments on US policy rather than focusing on the real issues confronting us today such as the rise of militant intolerant Islamic groups and world extortion by OPEC. After a couple of centuries of real intellectual growth and dramatic educational progress in the US, people realize that there is no empire of domination by the US. Instead, China, Russia, India, Japan and others are developing vibrant challenging societies which continue to vie for improved quality of life and supremacy of knowledge and development. Meanwhile with the exception of Israel, the entire rest of the Middle East is mired and wallowing in Islamic extremism and intolerance and subjugating ignorance of their female populations. This is the real tragedy of the Palestinians, Egyptians, Iraqis, Iranians and others downtrodden by the boots of the Imams in the Arab world. It is a very sad fact that none of it can be reasonably blamed on Israel or the US - and Said did not live to see his paranoid theses of non-existent world domination disproved. But they are disproved and everyone now knows it. The question is: How will the Arab countries and the rest of the world overcome the stifling influence of the modern day Islamic religious bigots and start to overcome their ignorance and blind hatred to live with Jews and Christians and Israel in mutual respect and peace... No need to trash Said. It is not about him and it never was. Although his ideas were rubbish and his scholarship was lame and his writings unsupported...He was trying. Unfortunately his story was one-sided and it failed miserably. And now we know better and in this age of rapid communication it is a lot easier to see Said's failures and move on the the real issues.... Said trashed himself and now we just step over the rubbish heap and make our way instead onto the true path to non-Said enlightenment. It is not the Israelis, it is not the Jews, it is not the Americans, it is not the Zionists. It is the Arabs and Palestinians, it is the radical Islamists, it is the purveyors of religious intolerance who we must all abhor and condemn. |

Just one point as I cannot be bothered to spend time and energy on someone who is clearly driven by one sided thinking. ====================================================== After a couple of centuries of real intellectual growth and dramatic educational progress in the US, people realize that there is no empire of domination by the US. ===================================================== The United States has fallen to "average" in international education rankings released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, according to the AFP. America has received scores around 500 on a scale that goes up to 1,000: 487 in math, 500 in reading and 502 in science. ==================================================================== The three-yearly OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) report, which compares the knowledge and skills of 15-year-olds in 70 countries around the world, ranked the United States 14th out of 34 OECD countries for reading skills, 17th for science and a below-average 25th for mathematics. ================================================================ Nuff said about a hater of Edward Said |
