Army Brats

Dashikis
Bell bottoms
the record player blaring away
Earth Wind and Fire
and then the arm drops a Marvin Gaye tune

Swedish meatballs
and pigs in the blanket
deviled eggs too
Miller, Tanqueray, Bacardi
and of course Coke

My brothers and I
sat on the stairs listening
to the music and watching
our parents
hang out
with a few of my father’s army buddies
and their wives

We suppress our giggles
because the sight of mom and dad dancing
was enough to make
all four of us Army brats
roll over in laughter

Our dad was stationed
in Frankfurt, Germany
at the time
I can’t remember
the exact year
but I do remember
how much fun
our parents had being in love
