I just bought a new LCD HDTV 720 with a 60h refresh rate. Right now I'm using a standard Sony DVD player in 480. I can't really afford a Blu-Ray player right now, but I want to be able to watch my DVDs in high definition. I know Blu-Ray players can upconvert standard DVDs...so should I just wait for the price to drop on the Blu-Ray players? Or just go with the cheap DVD upconverter?

When my DVD player died on me I bought a Blu-Ray. I've had only one DVD with bad playback from the upconversion, my DVD copy of Thou Shalt Not Kill...Except- it looks really grainy.

The few Blu-Ray movies I own, can't really say I notice a vast improvement in quality, and I have a fairly new HD TV.

Right on. Yeah, I'll probably just spring for the Blu-Ray. I might wanna stream some stuff. I forgot most of them have that feature. & 3D. And it really depends on the film itself, how sharp I want the picture. Some of them look better grainy.

But this wasn't a good kind of grainy, almost unwatchable, I think I'll get the Blu-Ray of Thou Shalt Not Kill...Except.

I also like watching Netflix through it better than on my Wii as it has more selection(even has a Netflix button on the controller), plus if I wanted to pay I can also do Hulu and some other streaming sites.

But so far I haven't had any problems with the movies on those 50 movie sets from Mill Creek, and those are public domain, zero remastered versions of the flicks, and they all play pretty good.

How cheap are you looking to go? They have some good cheap ones out there if you look.

I'd wait till you save the $$$. Even though BDP will output 1080p, it still looks awesome on a 720 which was my first flat panel.

I you ever have any questions other than this, just shot me a message. This is what I do for a living.

Had quite the ordeal trying to purchase a blu ray player. The first one I grabbed was a Sony for about $88 at Walmart. Took it home, hooked it up, and realized it didn't have a built in wi-fi for the streaming, so I had to return it for one that did. Found a Toshiba for the same price. Had the built in wi-fi & everything. Took it home, hooked it up, and all I got was a blank screen. So I had to return THAT one & decided to go with a Magnavox for $84.

It works great so far. The upconverter seems to work pretty good. It's fast and easy to operate. And it has the built in wi-fi for Netflix, Youtube, Vudu, etc...

In retrospect I should have just REALLY splurged and gotten a PS3. Oh well. I can just upgrade when the new playstation comes out & the price drops.

I thought about going the PS3 route, but I'm just more of a PC gamer.

Be aware if you're wear the **** out of the PS3 by gaming and watching BD movies, You're better off buying a separate BD player. If the lens goes out on your PS 3, it will or should only play DVD/CD's. There are models with dual lenses, but, Ill respond back if you're interested.
