I think it is about the decline of the Roman Catholic Church. At one point the church was the major world power. It had total control and during the crusades the crusaders were thought of as missionaries which would help to make sense of the chorus.

It's such a pretty song to listen to but the lyrics are very meaningful and I don't think people actually listen a lot of the time. They just hear that gorgeous voice and that it sounds like a happy melody but don't hear the words.

Viva la Vida!!.....means "LIVE THE LIFE"!!!..or.."LONG LIVE LIFE"
The song title refers to a painting by Frida Kahlo with the same title even though the painting on the cover is not hers.....I think this song is one of Coldplay's best.....

He could be singing "I am coming to kill Terri" and I would be swooning.

I thought It was the story of King Henry VIII, telling of when his empire fell and he became nothing when he was overthrown. Classic dictator falls story. Love the song and honestly Chris Martin is the only one who can really sing this, everybody else who tries to cover it sounds off key.

I've been a fan of Coldplay since Yellow came out...his voice is pretty sultry, I love when he sings ballads.
