Topic: Move to Canada, US or Oz?? | |

Well Since I am Irish American I woant to say if you want to come to USA I would welcome you with open arms but that has not always been the history and it is not likely to be the situation now. American's tend to romaticise aireland and are going to wonder why you are waqnting to come here the American dream is stumbleing and if you do not have a signed employment contract in teaching you are lible to end up slinging drinks and or food and have to dance to make a living.
Since Hispanics are the 4th lagest population nationwide and much higher in many areas you better be bilinglual in a proficient way if you have any hope of beating out the local competition at least 300,000 strong who have employment preferences as veterans and or their families. Nobody is jokeing about the incredible cost of health care in the USA. At your age you netter get any and all Dental work you can even remotely need before you come and you will be shocked to see what any kind of medication or even birthcontrol costs here. If you have any kind of health issues you may want to reconsider. The average wait to see a doctor her can be weeks if not months If you don't have credit you may have a hard time renting anything livable even if you can afford it. |

Hi Chloe,
Health care is good in Canada comparably. However things are slowly changing to a three tier health care system over the last ten years or so in the province I live in. Even so all provinces are under the umbrella of federal government of Canada. For example in the province I live in privitization is moving in. Private providers of personal health care plan options, where people can choose to buy their own coverage plan or, go through their work health care plan where deductions are made off your pay. Even so with the changes I have found we still do have a very good health care system(s) in this province and across the country where a high percentage of medical costs are covered by your plan provider you chose or through the place of employment plan provider. Here are some facts on Toronto you may want to check out facts which I think may be a good city to live in to start with. I do not live in Toronto but have visited there. Though housing costs are among the top five in the county, there are places to rent. You may want to move into a shared rental situation with three or four other singles which financial helps when starting out is an idea. Choosing a larger city to start has the advantage of more jobs opportunites to get work experience on your CV or resume whichever the case for you while learning about Canada saving money to relocate at a later date into i.e. a smaller city. This gives you time to check out things from the inside, while living in the Country. Facts on the City of Toronto: ttp://www.math.toronto.edu/toronto/ I have heard there is a large young Irish population growing in Toronto in the last couple of years. It may have something to do with Toronto having a Catholic ArchBishop that was given the role of Cardinal in the last year. So, if you are Catholic being Irish you may be though protestant too, and if Catholic this may make your transition easier. Coming from a small town this may bring you comfort after reading your reaction to the size of Texas' city populations that, Toronto having a very large population has very many suburbs to pick from to live in, giving a person a small town feel. It is as well a very multi-cultural city where some suburbs are many of one cultural ethnic group making the adjustment even more easy if you find an Irish community to settle into. Just throwing out some thoughts not knowing you but things which may make a difference. In regards to teaching and applying for jobs, you may want to check out first International Educational Equivalency Standards. For example, if your University degree from Ireland is equivalent to University Teaching degree in Canada or, in the US or for Australia if you decide on the later two countries. Here are some links for teaching jobs in Toronto (I googled "Are teachers needed in Torono Ontario") and many links populated from the search. Here are three as samples: http://www.oxfordlearning.com/careers/ http://ca.indeed.com/Teacher-jobs-in-Toronto,-ON http://www.simplyhired.ca/a/jobs/list/q-teaching+positions/l-toronto,+on Big decision in life to make Chloe as to, where do I want to live? Good luck and keep getting a lot of good consultation from many sources before you make your final decision. |

Good luck and keep getting a lot of good consultation from many sources before you make your final decision. Thanks a million for your reply. It was well thought out, it must have taken you ages!! Everyone keeps talking about Health Care. I didn't think it was such a big issue? At the moment I have a friend in Toronto that's been sending me some info and just telling me different things about the place in general. From what I've been told, you can apply for a Health Card once you're 3 months over their? Over here it's pretty expensive for Doctors too but sure if you're sick you'll have to pay I guess that's just the way it is. Thank god I'm rarely ever sick. I haven't looked into the job situation that much to be honest. I'm the kinda person that puts things off till last minute. I have been told that my certificates are recognised in Australia so I'm just assuming that they're recognised in Canada. I will look into that as soon as I get a chance. Ideally Social Care or Teaching is what I want to be doing (that's the big dream lol) But if I can't get a job in either of those areas straight away then I don't mind other jobs. As I have experience in Hotel, Restaurant, Bar Work and a few others I'm sure I'll find something to keep me going. Their are Travel Companies in Dublin that I've been in contact with. You pay them and they set up a job for you and get Visa's sorted. So if all comes to all I can just pay them to sort it all out for me. |

I've lived in Canada and the States
Am an American Citizen Canada was rough. Even though I was a gainfully employed (with an American Company) couldn't stay more than 90 days without being hassled to fill out Canadian paperwork. Would come back to the states for 24 hours, return and all would be good for the next 90 days. I think the Canadian governement is far more concerned than most, that they don't get more foreigners on their disability/medical roles Canada is way more expensive than the states. At least where I was. And the currency converter isn't much for any relief. It is BEAUTIFUL country though So I would say, do your homework no matter WHERE you choose. I returned to the states because of "myisland" Missed it and really can't think of a better place to live Good luck with your journey |

No problem Chloe, you are most welcome and glad I could contribute my sharing my thoughts in your asking. It looks like you have some things checked out. Yes, in Ontario the Health Care System is slightly different we had the same where in 3 months a person coming into Canada could apply for health benefits. In our province where I live the provincial health care went privitized, even so, we are still very covered well. Celebrate your good health Chloe and taking care of yourself would save you more dollars in term of health down the road into life, besides you would live longer! From your persceptive, young and healthy, it would seem strange to hear such an emphasis on the importance of health care. Looking around at the people on the thread all of us responders with the exception of one maybe or so, are older folks. We are no longer immortal in our bodies and have been subjected to the natural progression of "aging", hence, the importance played on health care from our persceptive. Nice services Dublin's airlines have arranging such things, great. With your flexibility employment wise you should be okay. Here are some links for social care jobs in Toronto: http://www.wowjobs.ca/BrowseResults.aspx?q=Social+Worker&s=r&l=Toronto%2C+ON http://www.toronto.ca/socialservices/pdf/odsp_spousedep.pdf http://ca.indeed.com/Social-Care-jobs-in-Toronto,-ON http://ca.indeed.com/Community-Service-Worker-jobs-in-Toronto,-ON http://www.gojobs.gov.on.ca/Search.aspx Google "Are there jobs in toronto for social care" for more links Chloe. Have a great day! |

Nah, Australia rules It's laid back, needs anyone who want's to work. and if you head up to the top end, there are 2 or 3 men to every women hmmm and if you want to consider america, the US Marines have just moved in. So you can have the best of both worlds. I usually head up to the territory during the dry season when i feel the need to shed some layers and thaw out from the cool of the south. Love the land up that way and the contrasting beauty of tropical heady Darwin...with the ruggedness of the outback as a backdrop...ooo & croc is not bad eating...tis like fishy chicken! |

Move to Texas. The rest of the world is overrated. i second this motion (that's two votes for texas) Why Texas? A wee bit more info would go a long way please Houston has one of the best economies in the US right now, and as a state, Texas is in the top 5 for jobs and overall fun... Austin is really booming right now too, which might be a better fit for you, as it is a major college town. Dallas and San Antonio have some of the largest population booms in the US, they both are ranked in the top ten fastest growing US cities. (or their suburbs are)... what kind of work do you do? if anything to do with gas and oil, Houston would be a good fit for you. I can work as; Pre School Teacher (kindergarten) Primary School Teacher (elementary) [Teaching kids up to 10 years old] Kids with disabilities Adults with disabilities Youth Advocate (working with troubled teens) I'm qualified to work in any of these areas. Thanks for the reply Teaching profession is being cut back right now, I think everywhere in the USA. Just don't tell anyone if I'm wrong about that! i think you may be wrong, even the government is giving extra grant money for students to become educators. they do need teachers out here, in some places more than others. i think the states just don't pay enough for people to put up with the politics involved with it. but what i have heard from friends that are teachers is that the lower the grade they teach, the better and easier it is. I nknow i would never even try to teach high schoolers out here, because of their attitude... That's true! Although kids are a handful at the best of times, it is SO much easier with younger kids. If you come to TX with that sexy Irish lilt, I imagine you won't be single long! Lilt Although I've been known for doing the Riverdance after a few too many Would that qualify? Oh he just wants you and won't say it. LOL. WHY DID NO ONE ELSE BURST INTO SINGING "BLAME CANADA!!" ??? 150,000 small in Texas? NO. I was in Hell, TX which is less than 500 people. |
