American bull terriers (the correct name for pit bulls) are a cross breed of bull dog and English, Scottish and Irish terriers. These were originally used to bait bulls and bears until that was deemed cruel, it was at that time that they began being used for fighting. First it was ratting (a number of rats and one dog in a cage) then dog fighting. Not to nit pick, but it's "American Pit Bull Terriers". And according to Bulldogbreed.com, "A forbearer to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, they were originally bred to be a fighting dog". Pit bull is not a breed. Pit Bull is a nick name for them and is why you see when properly written as American [Pit Bull] Terriers. The breed is American Bull Terriers and as I mentioned above they are a cross breed of several breeds and are a member of the Molosser breed group which include various Mastiff breeds, Bull Dogs, Boxers, Himalayan Sheepdogs among a host of others. This is getting annoying. Bull Terriers are NOT Pit Bulls. Those are two different breeds. The full name of "Pit Bulls" is "American Pit Bull Terrier" as that is how they are registered with the United Kennel Club and American Dog Breeders Association. Why are you so desperate to remove "Pit Bull" from the name of the dog? That's part of their name. It's the shortened form that is most familiar to people. Is it because "Pit Bull" is (correctly) believed to be the most dangerous dog breed? 2011 dog bite fatalities 31 U.S. fatal dog attacks occurred in 2011. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 650 U.S. cities, pit bulls led these attacks accounting for 71% (22). Pit bulls make up less than 5% of the total U.S. dog population. ... The year 2011 also marks an increase in pet pit bulls killing their owners. Of the 8 total instances this year in which a family dog inflicted fatal injury to its primary caretaker, the dog's owner, 88% (7) involved pet pit bulls. I don't believe that Pit Bulls or any other pet should be illegal, but if your pet hurts or kills another person, you should be prosecuted. |

Darla Napora, 32-years old, was mauled to death by one of her two pet pit bulls inside her Pacifica home. At the time attack, Darla was in her sixth month of pregnancy. Her husband, Greg Napora, returned from work that day at lunchtime and discovered her body on the floor with the couple's 2-year old male pit bull hovering over it. According to Greg, Darla was an avid fan of Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pit Bulls (Bad Rap). Greg did not explain why the couple had not neutered "Gunner," as strongly recommended by the group. The pair's other pit bull was a spayed female and was not involved in the attack. Twenty-four hours after her death, Greg delivered intolerable statements to the media including: 1.) "He doesn't blame the dog," 2.) It's "not the breed's fault," 3.) "[Pit bulls] are the most loving animals I have ever had in my life," and 4.) He "plans to bury his spouse, Darla, with their pet's cremated remains in her casket." His last statement, in particular, horrified citizens across the United States. His pregnant wife was killed by his dog, but he continued to defend it and it's breed. There is something almost cult like about Pit Bull owners... |

I was merely pointing out that Pit Bull is not a breed but its the nick name given to them because of their ancestry (Bull Dogs) and they're original duty of baiting bulls but apparently you cannot comprehend English very well because I made it clear in my second post. |

So you insist on calling the American Pit Bull Terrier by your entirely made up name of "American Bull Terriers"? Fine, whatever. Your defense of the dangers of this breed is to insist that they weren't breed for fighting other dogs, just for attacking animals 23x larger than them...and winning? |

I'd bet 3/4ths, if not more, aren't actually pit bulls, but are other breeds altogether. Our news sources aren't exactly the brightest groups running around and are more then willing to label a vicious dog attack as a pit bull. http://blog.mysanantonio.com/animals/files/2011/01/pitbullposter.jpg |

I'm not that familiar with breeding and such, but genotype does not necessarily equal phenotype. Fighting dogs have to be trained to fight, as I have been told. Fighting dogs do not have to be trained to fight. They are bred for aggressiveness and tenacity. Terriers of all breeds were bred to fight vermin in holes, hence the name Terrier or earth dog. |

Hardly, having grown up with various breeds of dogs, I'd personally go with Great Pyrenees as the worst. My APBT doesn't rank anywhere near them on the vicious scale, my own, that is. |

It's not the breed. It's breeding and upbringing. Just like any other animal, including human. I'm sooooooo with you on that!! |

Hell, sweet loveable family dogs like a lab will snap. Bunny wabbits will snap. Human beans will snap. I guess my point is feed them, love them and treat them right and all animals, including the human variety will snap less often. |

I founded and run a pit bull rescue. I have 4 kids that help me everyday to feed, train, love and care for the pits in our rescue. We not only adopt them as pets but also train for search/rescue and service therapy for the disabled. And NO, We have never had a pit bite any of us either. That is always the first question from people who dont know any different than what the media shows them. We take stray pits, pits from the pound and pits straight from animal cruelty to vested working dogs. I work everyday to help change their image but you cant help the fact that some people will always be ignorant. Instead of spending my time arguing with people about this subject, I spend my days with my vested working pits finding lost children and elderly, visiting schools, libraries, elderly homes, orphanages, and hospitals. I suggest all pit lovers do the same. Instead of wasting time arguing start a pet food drive for your local pit bull shelter or even volunteer. To much time and energy is wasted arguing over this subject, instead use your time and energy in a positive way for the breed.

TUH... IF A PIT IS RAISED RIGHT... AND NOT BY SOMEONE TREATING IT LIKE A CHILD... THEY R THE BEST DOGS... IT'S JUST IGNORANT PEOPLE THAT DON'T SOCIALIZE THEM FROM A PUPPY... AND LIKE I SAID TRY TO RAISE THEM LIKE A CHILD INSTEAD OF A DOG THAT'S WHERE THE FIRST PROBLEM STARTS... RAISE THEM LIKE A PACK ... A PACK HAS A HIERARCHY... IF RAISE CORRECTLY... YA CAN'T FIND A BETTER DOG... IT'S JUST PEOPLE THAT HAVE NO CLUE...SOOO... WHEN THE DOG STEPS UP IN THE DOMINANT POSITION CUZZZ... THE PEOPLE ARE CLUELESS TO THE BREED OR ANY DOMINANT BREED... WHEN THE PEOPLE CATER AND LET THE DOG THINK IT'S THE LEADER... THIS SOCALLED SNAP...IS IT JUST DOING WHAT A LEADER OF A PACK DOES TO PUT A SUBBORDINANT IN LINE...YOU CAN'T BLAME A DOG FOR BEING A DOG... BLAME THE UNEDUCATED PERSONS WHO PUT THE DOG IN THAT POSITION... IF U R GONNA OWN AN ANIMAL... IT'S UR RESPONSIBILITY TO DO UR HOMEWORK...NOT THE DOGS... I FEEL BAD FOR ANYONE HARMED BY ANY ANIMAL... BUT...IT'S THE PEOPLES IGNORANCE...AND THAT'S SOOO... VERY SAD... CUZZZ... A PITBULL IS THE MOST LOYAL AND LOVING DOG... AND LIKE I SAID... IF RAISED BY THE RIGHT TYPE OF PEOPLE... (THE ONES WITH COMMON SENSE AND HALF A BRAIN) A PERSON THAT RAISES THEM WITH CONSISTANT LOVE AND DISAPLIN... WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE THE LEADERS AS LONG AS THE DOG DOESN'T FEEL LIKE THE WHOOPIN DOG... IT GLADLY LET'S THE PEOPLE LEAD... ALL I CAN SAY... BEFORE ANYBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO JUDGE ANY OF HIS CREATURES... SPEND ATLEAST 1 WEEK IN A PITBULL RESCUE... FULL HANDS ON...ASK THE PEOPLE RUNNIN IT ALL THE QUESTIONS U NEED TO MAKE URSELF AWARE... NOT INTERNET ONE SIDED PUBLICITY...

To much time and energy is wasted arguing over this subject, instead use your time and energy in a positive way for the breed. I have found that its all about temperament and personality. Dogs have needs just like we have needs, and often when a dog demonstrates behavioral issues often it is becuase many of its needs are not being met. I rescue and train dogs as a hobby. Sometimes when someone brings me in on an issue with there aggressive dog it is just not getting the energy draining activities it needs. Many of these dog breeds have traits bred in for working in high energy activities. You just cant expect a dog like this to respect a home body and follow a pack leader that cant even keep up. The ritual of dog training helps shape and mold the responses a dog will have to various stimulus, if you never peak a given response becuase you never introduce a given stimulus then you may end up surprised. That is the reason you have to take a dog into all kinds of situations were you have control. You gauge the responses and learn the tendencies of that given animal. Learn the responses to the various stimulus. I rescued a female German Shepard mix, she was very sweet, but nervous, shy, afraid. She did not do well around kids becuase they move fast, and do not always understand boundaries. Well she was going to be put down becuase she effectively nose butted a 3 year old that was trying to hug her, and her front tooth made a noticeable red mark. I convinced the owner to give the dog over to the local SPCA and we trained and re-homed the dog. She died of old age having led a happy life 10 years later. I often find people get a dog like a PB and then expect it to be a lazy house dog no matter the temperament, breeding, or tendencies. It is not always the case, but I think most times it is just the wrong dog for the wrong owner. |
