I'm not a religious man....and I know during the holidays everybody is bombarded with this song. Today, however....I was in Wal-Greens and singing along to this on their PA system. I know it sounds cheesy....but I was actually thinking what a great song this is. The words are beautiful. I came home and looked up the history of this.....and the lyrics. They were written in 1818 by an Austrian priest names Joseph Mohr. Here they are:
Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright Round yon Virgin Mother and Child Holy Infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ, the Saviour is born Christ, the Saviour is born Silent night, holy night Son of God, love's pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth " |

I'm gonna' work on a variation of this to record. I think it is a beautiful song. They say familiarity breeds contempt. In the case of this song it rings true....at least in my case. I got so sick of hearing it over the years. Today, however....I saw it for what it really is. It's like I heard it for the first time ever....... It's about promise and redemption.

I dread December 1st..The local radio stations start playing Christmas Carols, as do all the Department/Grocery Stores..
On the other hand, just hearing O Holy Night, can reduce me to tears.. So I kind a hear ya.. |

Hah, contempt... go for what you know to be true.... in your own thinking. Save contempt for those who stay stuck in a conformists' mindset... And Good Luck with your variation. (just for kicks... try researching Amazing Grace and the writer. made me rethink my pitiful story.) |
