Topic: USB Ports | |
---|---|
Has anyone ever had one of the USB ports stop working on their system? In device manager, the 2nd USB port looks fine. When I plug in a printer or modem into that port, nothing happens. Windows doesn't recognize any new devices. I've gone inside the case and still didn't find any noticeable problems. That port just won't work. I'm open to suggestions.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, tksmooth |

I'm assuming that same device using the same cable works just fine in the first USB port?
I have had a similar problem with older laptops, for me it was almost certainly a physical problem, not a software problem, and laptops are such a pain to fix I just got a cheap 4-port USB card to put in the cardbus (formerly known as PCMCIA) slot and kept on trucking. It sounds like you are using a desktop, you can put also put a new USB expansion card inside the computer. Or hell, just use a hub. |

Hubs are great especially if you have many peripheral devices. Sometimes the usb ports can only manage so much energy going out and even though it has more than one port it may have only enough to manage for one port. I have noticed this when using a web cam and a printer at the same time. With parallel ports one can daisy chain and you don't have the energy problem.
