I can understand,it's not easy to avoid generalization every time but I found many people are generalizing unnecessary.

Is it due to the fact that generalization creates more controversy & such topics gets more response?

Few generalized topics I seen here are really unnecessary & funny too.anyone who has fairly balanced thinking will not ever tolerate those thoughts.

To my opinion generalization in any matter always makes injustice to someone somehow.

What do u think?

perception is reality

so people speak in terms of their 'reality' which is hard to pinpoint by any absolute measure

at this point in my life , I have come to accept that when someone speaks , it is a generalization that is based in their perception of reality resulting from their experiences and influences...

I can agree with this and I think we all do it at times. but I also think - depending on the subject, as some of the topics obviously are silly & people are joking - generalizations give an impression that the person making them has not thought through the exceptions, or is ignoring the humanity & individuality of members of a group by saying "all" whomevers do....whatever ....when that is clearly not true

true

I was raised to not speak unless I had something to say. funny thing is my relatives were the biggest bunch of talkers - esp on my mom's side... kinda ironiclaugh

I often throw out generalizations and stir the pot. There will be some truth to what I say but I will play devil's advocate as I have joked with one of my friends, I will play the devil's entire entourage to see what people think. I know that my true friends know I am not some helpless woman at all but it is fun to point generalizations between men and women. Most of the women who I banter with on here have the balls and bravery and smarts of 10 ordinary people and so if I set of a small spark, it will spread like a wild fire in Malibu in the Santa Ana winds. I very much love to see my strong women friends' opinions. I have always had a very thick skin and do not worry about haters and such. Even in real life, I am very famous if someone annoys me for saying "BAH!" and waving my hand and dismissing them. You will notice that if I start a thread like that I will only pop in every so often to churn things a little. I do not go in there full force defending things. I rather let my female counterparts do the talking and also see how men react to what is being said. I have always valued and been interested in other people's opinions. I find it fascinating. I have a lot of faith in humanity because of the blastings I have taken from forward thinking women. I think there is a misconception that it somehow bothers me or hurts me. But really it affirms to me that it is not 1962 anymore. It is very much 2011. Though sometimes I do get disappointed by men who kind of going into caveman mode when arguing with the women's points but that is usually short lived because one of what I call "god's most brilliant and best" as far as men (yes, there are a lot of those who are women too) will step in and say something very complex and interesting.

there are days when I think it would be fun were it still 1962

dont forget that our brains are 'wired' to compartmentalize things, which is another way to 'generalize' the information we take in and use it to make choices,,,,

Generalization don't mean segregation, sorting out or classification.

very true - a good point - it is to a great extent how we are biologically wired to process information - generalizing & compartmentalizing allows us to prevent over stimulation, sort categories - for further breakdown....(less generalization) later

sometimes I wonder, however, how long should that process really take. I mean most adults past age 18 should know that there is no such thing as all men or all women doing anythinglaugh
