I am just curious...I am involved in Occupy Seattle which I do understand is controversial. I am proud to say ours is the 5th largest occupation in America. It's nice to see that the average American CAN make a difference. My questions to you are: What difference would you like to see in American politics / government? The banking industry? Wall Street? Education?

I would like to see us have a better quality of living , by taking the examples of the countries which do.

The depth and seriousness of this nation's problems are great but not insurmountable. What must happen is that the people, the government and the business sector must start working together to solve our many problems. The solutions will come through cooperative efforts to create new industries, new jobs, rebuild our national infrastructure, significantly improve oureducations systems, maintain reasonable and fair regulations of businesses, and reestablish a good relationship between corporations and worker/consumers.
Corporations have to realize that they are only a part of America; their corporate charters do not give them the right to use their money, power and influence to corrupt our political system and attempt to dominate the nation's agenda. So far they have chosen to ignore such advice and warnings but with each passing day momentum is growing against them. If they don't heed the warnings and continue to anger and alienate the majorityof Americans then they will suffer the consequences of their shortsighted thinking.
And as such it may be time to consider adopting and developingsome other economic system that might prove to be a better fit for America. Within the science of economics there are various forms of capitalism; free-market capitalism, corporate capitalism, state capitalism, social capitalism and a few others that nations use.

We need to elect Ron Paul in 2012 and return our country back to its Constitutional roots, reinstate the liberties we have lost under bad leadership afforded us in our Bill Of Rights, END POLITICAL LOBBYING BY CORPORATIONS that has corrupted our political system, return power to the people..... NOT W,DC!

Keep up the good work!

Well we do have some of the top qualities of life here in the US. But feel free to give some examples of what you are talking about especially with countries of similar population.

Personally I think we need smaller government. We should stop bank rolling the majority of the UN(there are lots of countries that pay nothing and are members), work on an alternative to SS as it wont last for every (need to not wait until its too late), reform welfare with an emphasis on education and not just dishing out money. Thats just off the top of my head.

End The Fed.

Central banking is, by and large, the cause of the problems we face. The ability to create currency and pass it out as the whim suits is a horrific power to instill upon a private banking cartel.

Term limits on congress.

Return the senate to the selection of state legislators.

Return banking and lending to responsible methods.

Let those banks who fail ... fail.

Pass a balanced budget amendment with a paydown clause on the national debt.

Instigate massive controls on who gives and how much money can go to politicians.

End public unions.

End political correctness and start correctness.

Reform entitlements to match future income.

Get rid of the Fed.

Close the borders.

End support for illegals.

I think they are on target since both parties are stooges for the international elites.

We are as screwed as the folks in Greece and then some.

I read today about the super congress and their ideas for the defecit. Of course the dems wish to have a shared sacrafice but this small gesture only returns us to the pre Bush tax levels, realy no sacrafice for corperate interests.

Of course the republicans have their wish list and its tax cuts for the rich( more trickle down) so the compromise is realy the middle class and poor getting screwed to differant degrees.

Its realy time to take a stand. I can kid myself and say my 65 to 75 K a year and union contract keeps me out of the fray but I know its just a matter of time untill the cost of liveing eats away at any financial gains this small potato can make.

Food and fuel do not keep up with the paycheck we are being killed by a thousand cuts.

We need to look closer at their "cuts"!

Seems to me it's only a percentage of "future increases" in spending, and not cuts at all!

Also someone should work on a back up plan for society if the grid fails.

We have become so dependent on technology, people can't function without it.

^^^ This is what I want, and stated better than I may have done myself. If I were to write an essay, I might expand on areas not mentioned here. What I would like to see are a number of plans/options presented in-line with this answer.

That said, I believe the trend this country has been in began just after the Civil War. When the Confederacy surrendered, the South had already lost much of their wealth, and hence much of the power and influence which countered political pressure from Northern industrialists. Reconstruction and western expansion required a great deal of Northern capital. Meanwhile, the Southern states were reluctantly searching for a new sense of identity as they began the slow shift away from its old agrarian economy. It was during this time that many tycoons began receiving favorable policies from the Federal government. Cattle ranchers, fisheries, loggers, miners, fur traders, oil companies, and railroads all lobbied for special treatment as each sought to monopolize specific regions. Such lobbying played a large role in the Pacific Northwest.

As the west became settled, many citizens wanted regular news from back east. With railroads and telegraphs, this gave rise to the first media moguls in the form of newspaper publishers. These publishers saw an opportunity to now sway public political opinion on a national level rather than just a state or regional level. In other words, they could control politics - the combination of money, contacts, and control of information placed many publishers firmly on the side of capitalism over journalism.

To cut a long story short, Reconstruction opened the door to corruption (Grant's administration was plagued by it). The new system of corruption was mostly unchallenged for 40 years until Teddy Roosevelt became President. After he left office, corruption rose once again until FDR began his own crackdown, partly because he idolized Teddy and partly because of the Great Depression.

Since then, the pendulum has swung back and forth several times, though 1971 appears to be a turning point. That was when the U.S. officially abandoned the gold standard. It was also during the Oil Embargo when inflation was very high, and foreign imports began to gain an increased foothold. Over the next 10 years, American manufacturing began shrinking as big business began moving plants overseas. In short, 1971 saw the birth of the new global economy. Forty years later, that new economy has hurt more than it has helped.

damn right size matters. name a country that comes close to having the same number of well off people as america does. even on a percentage basis america's lifestyle is hard to beat but when you consider that hundreds of millions are better off in this country than anywhere near that number in any other country the size becomes important. that a family of twenty can provide for five times a family of four says alot about the efficiency of the larger family.

I spent 10 days at "Stop the Machine! Create a New World!" occupy movement in D.C. last month. I specified this because there are 2 Occupy D.C. groups. We closed banks, picketed, marched, protested & educated. It was exhausting, but empowering.
