Topic: Grandmother Update | |

Well, not quite sure what is happening medically as I said there is a DNR on her and she is almost 93 so with the breast cancer, they are not doing anything....not even tracking progression...Wed. we thought it had gone to her brain. She had literally went to bed and got up 5 times, getting completely redressed 5 times, doing her hair, putting on make up, and jewelry and getting ready to go over and over. Now she is acting normally again. The external mass has not grown but it was already huge... She is comfortable. She was already on pain meds and an anti-depressant. The decision was made not to tell her about the cancer because of the Alzheimer's for fear she would attempt to harm herself... My parents and I are the only ones who know....my parents weren't going to tell me but I have this weird empathy thing where I can feel when my mother is stressing and I could not rest because she was stressing so she had to tell me last weekend. It is nice that I have anon. friends to tell as I cannot tell people I know who may treat my grandmother differently and blow it. Anyway, con't. thoughts and prayers are appreciated. They are obviously being heard and working as my parents are more at peace and my grandmother while it is progressing is not suffering. And your prayers for me worked too. I got the flu which is very bad this year and was very sick but a lot of people are ending up in the hospital or in bed and I was neither just very sick for a week. I didn't even go to the doctor. My house got neglected but for the flu I got I did really well so thank you for the prayers and good thoughts because they worked better than Flintstone's vitamins. : )

My thoughts and blessings go out to you and your family. As a nurse, I have been trained that most fear pain and suffering that leads up to death. May your grandmother continue a comfortable and pain-free transition. I also ask for blessings to your family for the courage, strength, and dedication it takes to deal with such a trying situation. Much love to you!!!

Thank you guys so much. No problem; keeping you in prayers. A book that might be helpful to your family is called the "36 Hour Day". Lots of undderstandable information and tips for Caregiver Families of patients with Dementia. Dressing and redressing is ok. If she is not aware it is just light activity/exercise that she can feel successful at. If it is too exhausting for her caregivers they may try substituteing dressing teddybears or dolls. |
