My mom was a first class cook. She made lots of variety and everyone loved her cooking.
If you really want to learn how to cook the basics in an easy way, you should get a copy of the "Joy of Cooking". Most of the recipes are simple and infinitely variable. I don't think I every knew a kid who didn't like beef stew. A crock pot makes it foolproof and prep only takes minutes. You can make it on the cooktop too. A minor variation of beef stew is pot roast. All kids love it. Change a few ingredients and you have pork roast. Change a few again and you have chicken and dumplings, every kids favorite. I loved some dishes which are super simple to make but have more complex flavors like sausage and sauerkraut or pork chops and sauerkraut. For economy and healther cooking, it is hard to be easier than roast chicken. Throw the leftovers in the pot and you have chicken soup. A lot of the dishes I make now are more complex, take more time, and have complex spice blends, but the old standbys I had as a kid still taste good. Much of the nutrition a kid needs can come in the form of a salad. We had salad at almost every meal. |
