Topic: Has anyone visited Russia? Or lived there? | |
---|---|
I don't have any concrete dates yet, but after I get my Associate degree I'd love to study in Russia for a year.
Does anyone have any good (or bad) stories to share about Russia? Also uh, hi! I'm new, and this is my first topic. |

I'm new, and this is my first topic. I went to Belarus for a day. It's one country East of Russia and one of the former Soviet counties. It's still run very much like Russia and they speak Russian. I would love to go back. I will say that the culture is very different from the U.S. Not necessarily worse, but be ready for some culture shock. And definitely learn some of the language. Very few people speak English over there. I had a Russian/English dictionary which is the only thing that really helped me. I would recommend going. Be prepared though; some of the things we take for granted here in the states are luxuries in Europe. T.P. in the restroom, toilets for that matter in the men's room (in the train station in Minsk). . . . |

I'm new, and this is my first topic. I lived in Germany for years. You'll definitely want to know Russian so you can "get around." Russia is on my bucket list for maybe 5 years from now. |

Yes in 1987, St. Petersburg re-tracing my grand fathers birth place. I was there four three months. It is a beautiful city. A very grand port, with thousands of shops. Wonderful Museums, and the palaces.

Yes, I went on a mission trip there in 2004. Spent time in Kaluga and a day in Moscow. It interested me to see those people who had lived under communism and those younger ones who had not. The way they dress, colors, expressions. Enjoyed the food and the people.

Your grammar and usage is strange-you write like a foreigner just learning the language-but I get your general meaning. |

during my career i was fortunate enough to have visited fifty two countries on six continents. visited moscow on a few occassions and refueled on the way to the orient on russia's pacific coast a number of times. but where i really learned about the country was during a two week trip flying an emerging markets mutual fund manager to several cities and towns throughout the interior in the early nineties.
russia is the only place on the planet that does not speak english exclusively for air traffic control. only their international airports controllers can be relied upon to english. in most other towers the controllers don't know the first word in english. so we had to carry a russian navigator in the cockpit with us everywhere who would communicate on the radio and intepret commands and instructions to us. i know, scary thought huh? but the weather was nice the whole time so no biggie. our navagator, alexandre, was a wonderful guide on the ground too. he took us on a tour of katerinburg [sp?] where the last czar and his family were shot and many other places i never would have thought to visit. and of course he was handy with a restaraunt menue. anyway, to make would i could make to be a very long story short, i and the rest of the crew had a fabulous time learning about this vast country. don't ever talk about russians do this or russians do that. it's an even more diverse country than america and i could not find one person who isn't quite happy that america won the cold war. i came away with the impression that the people in russia have been on our side all these decades. win a beer in a bar with this one. bet someone he/she can't guess how many time zones russia has. answer...................eleven. is that a big place or what? |
