The thing that laymen don't understand about pure scientific research is that there scientists every where who want to know the answers to everything. It is not a good idea to influence the direction of a scientist's curiosity according to what the layman finds practical at the time. This is because at some time in the future, Somebody is going to be doing research into something of urgent importance, and they may be needing to find this earlier research as a component of their efforts. This is how science evolves. While I can not imagine where the penis length of gay men could possibly be relevant, I just don't think it's good policy for laymen to be picking and choosing what areas are worth promoting.
