always carry bear spray or as we here in montana found,
a can of wasp spray works even better at a quarter the price.
wasp spray carries twice the distance too.

If I see a bear in the woods, it's okay, it doesn't want to hurt me, it just wants to be my pimp. Okay, sorry, that probably should be explained. When I was younger I was going to join a friend of mine in Indiana, this friend happens to have several acres of woods in their backyard. My parents heard about this and told me this terrible tale of something that may happen, that we're out walking one day and we happen upon a bear and it attacks me, and then soon afterward my friend gets mad at me and kicks me out in the middle of the night and I have nowhere to go so I run to the bus station (that they don't happen to have in the town I was going to) and there's a guy there that talks to me nicely and buys me a meal and then demands that I be his prostitute and before I know it I'm a hooker in Indiana. I might mention that my friend doesn't have bears in his backyard and the nearest bear is a hundred miles away. My parents to this day still don't understand what's so funny about the hypothetical situation they told me all about.

I make sure to have my .44 when walking around in bear country. I will back away slowly myself. I have heard all kinds of people tell you to lay down, or get big, or be aggressive and yell ect ect.

Personally, after working with both tame and not so tame animals for years I will take backing away slowly while keeping my eyes on the target, thanks.

Have you actually had occasion to use wasp spray? Knowing the kinds of nasty stuff in that I do not doubt it works.

WOW that couldn't be further from the truth. Wasp spray as a bear attack deterrent is a bad idea. It is a MYTH! Stick with the Bear Spray that's what the EPA recommends. Wasp spray has never been tested on animals and to trust your life with it! Really? Bear Spray also fires 35 ft with a spray pattern that will cover an entire doorway not requiring much accuracy. Wasp spray maybe shoots a stream delivery 20 ft requiring tremendous accuracy. Quit spreading this ridiculous myth before you get some seriously hurt or worse killed!

Speak to the bear in a steady voice.
Stand tall to project strength.

Let's just hope it doesn't happen

I live in the Redwoods and have come accross plenty of black bears, I just keep about my buisness as I was they havent bothered me yet. Oh not to say that a moma bear with cubbs wouldnt try to ward you off, a situation I havent yet found myself in, but if this does happen the momma tedy just wants space for her babys so by all means feel free to run. Also for a bear thats continuously wrecking your orchard, the best place for troublesome bears is in a deep whole, idd suggest a 30otsix, just dont get cought.
